Let the Forest Service Know How We Want Our National Forests Managed
Attend the Open Houses
by Ruth Hartzler

It's time to let the Forest Service know how we want our National Forests managed.  Over the past year, the Forest Service has been developing an amazingly comprehensive revision to the Nantahala-Pisgah Forests Management plan. As part of this process, the Forest Service is holding open houses across our region.  You are invited to discuss your interests one-on-one with District Rangers and key Forest Service staff, and ask any questions that you have.  They want to hear what you have to say!  Here are some thoughts you might consider.

The Appalachian Trail corridor has special protections.  We can let the Forest Service know that we also want the Mountains-to-Sea Trail corridor protected in addition to the Art Loeb, Benton MacKaye and Bartram long distance trail corridors.

Members of CMC's Conservation Committee will be attending the Pisgah District and Appalachian District open houses, on  July 13th in Brevard and on July 25th in Mars Hill, respectively.  Join us!

TRAIL MAINTENANCE SIGNS
by Ron Navik

Each CMC Maintenance Crew is now "signing" their work. Each crew is carrying signs that CAUTION hikers about potentially dangerous trail work ahead and also provide recognition to CMC as the organization that is maintaining the trails. The signs are posted at each end of the section being worked on and has helped both the maintainers and hikers avoid surprises when they meet. And, we all like the recognition!

***** SAVE THE DATE*****

CMC's Annual Meeting and Dinner will be held on Monday, October 30th at the Biltmore Town Square Hilton, beginning at 5:30 pm.  Join good friends for good fellowship, good food, and a continued celebration of the 40th anniversary of the MST with speaker Kate Dixon, Executive Director of the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail. Tickets will be available in September.

It's again time to Point, Click, and Send!

The annual dinner is four months away and that means another Photo Sharing opportunity.  The rules remain the same.  The topic is People on the Trail - working, hiking, being silly or sad or petulant - Catch your friends in some off-beat moments, but please, no trail break pics.  As always, your thank-you for sharing is your name on your photos and a pat on the back for helping to enliven the social hour.  Have some fun with summer photos, fall photos, entertaining photos - with at least one person in each photograph.   Your mission:  Go forth and point, click, and send.  Thanks for being part of the entertainment.

Hiking Classes at OLLI - Volunteers Needed

UNCA's College for Seniors (aka OLLI - Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) has ramped up its outdoor program and offers Beginning and Intermediate hiking classes.  Last spring seven classes were scheduled, with 120 people enrolled and 100 left on the waiting list!  Many participants were avid hikers in past years, but due to various reasons - including "metal replacement parts" - outdoor adventures were sidelined.  The OLLI program offers short hikes, 3 to 4 miles on gentle terrain - a good way to test out those new parts!

This fall fewer classes will be scheduled due to a lack of available volunteer instructors. In fact, one of the instructors, a CMC member, may not be able to keep his commitment to lead four of the scheduled hikes on Mondays from 2:00 - 5:30, September 18, 25, October 2 and 9. The hikes will be 3-4 miles long to Laurel Creek, Bent Creek, Catawba Falls, and Rattlesnake Lodge.

If you are interested in being on stand-by as back-up for these four hikes should that be necessary, please contact Lori Postal at [email protected].  Also, if you are interested in leading some OLLI hikes next spring, drop Lori a line.

A Bit of History
