Nick Merkely
Arizona Coyotes
This month's player spotlight is on Arizona Coyotes' draft pick, Nick Merkley. In 2014, The Calgary, Alberta native was awarded the WHL's Rookie of the Year Trophy after his outstanding first season with the Kelowna Rockets. The following season, Nick was selected by the Coyotes in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. In total, Nick spent four seasons with the Rockets, averaging more than one point per game in 245 regular season contests.
Since his selection, Nick has battled through injuries, which included a season-ending torn ACL during the 2015-16 season. Nick recently participated in the Coyotes' summer development camp and he was featured in this interview.

Where Are NHL Salaries Going?
Gudbranson Golf a Huge Success
On 18-Jun-17, the NHL and the NHLPA jointly announced a $2 million increase to the 2017-18 salary cap allowing teams to spend up to $75 million.  This represents only 2.7% increase over the 2016-17 salary cap. This article explains some of the factors that are impacting players' paycheques.

ARTICLE 15.12:  ROOKIE 
ORIENTATION PROGRAM

The NHL and NHLPA agree to jointly sponsor an annual Rookie Orientation Program ("ROP") in each off-season. The purpose of the ROP is to educate Players regarding the challenges they may face as an NHL Player and the life skills they will need to develop in order to meet those challenges. Each Club shall select up to three (3) Entry Level Players who are expected to be playing in the NHL for a significant period of time in the upcoming season to attend each ROP.
