VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION RECEPTION HIGHLIGHTS
On Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Maggiano's in Tysons Corner, Shelter House held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception to honor and celebrate its volunteers who have truly made an impact in our community. It was an evening full of excitement, wonderful food, fabulous raffle prizes and well-deserved awards! BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT - THOMAS GOODWIN & VANESSA GODSHALK
Throughout his three year term as Chairman of the Board, Thomas Goodwin provided his leadership, energy and expertise to help catapult Shelter House into its next generation. Mr. Goodwin will remain on the Board, but leaves his position as Chair with a fully developed three year Strategic Plan that will help guide the enterprise to even more growth.
We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Vanessa Godshalk as in the incoming Chair to the Shelter House Board! Vanessa has been on the Board of Shelter House for nearly five years and is very excited to carry out the mission and vision of the organization. We look forward to having her create new developments for the organization and appreciate her valued support as we grow and continue to better serve those facing homelessness and domestic violence.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT - THE BOEING COMPANY
On behalf of everyone at Shelter House and the clients we serve, we want to sincerely acknowledge and thank
The Boeing Company (a
multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and sells airplanes, rotorcraft, rockets, and satellites worldwide)
for their generous donation of $1,400 from their recent employee golf tournament.
In addition to their donation, we were honored to give Ike Eichenbrenner and Jim Heiertz of Boeing a tour of our Katherine Hanley Family Shelter!
Generous gifts from donors like Boeing allow us to continue to provide the crisis intervention, safe housing, and supportive services necessary to promote self-sufficiency for homeless families and victims of domestic violence within our community!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - HITT CONTRACTING INC.
In June, HITT held their annual "Intern Service Day" project, which included servicing our Patrick Henry Family Shelter. Known as the oldest building among our three shelters, as you can imagine, our Patrick Henry Family Shelter needed some much-needed maintenance. HITT's efforts included building out a closet for extra storage space, cleaning and repairing the paint and window treatments in the community room, building a retaining wall for the playground to slow water at a flood point, building a curtain wall in the shelter's file storage area to be used as a meeting room, painting almost every public wall in the building and power washing the entire outside of the building. HITT provides support to Shelter House throughout the year and we appreciate their collaboration, passion and efforts!

SHELTER HOUSE STAFF RECOGNIZES CULTURAL SENSITIVITY
Shelter House Staff participated in an interactive and thought-provoking Cultural Sensitivity training presented by Chianti Blackmon, Director of the Office of Multicultural Student Services at
Frederick Community College
in Frederick, MD. The training allowed staff to think outside of the box and see how diversity impacts staff and client services. Staff were asked a series of questions where they had to identify which question made them feel most connected to different dimensions of diversity including gender, religion/faith, socioeconomic status, sexu
al orientation, disability and race/ethnicity. To remember key points from the training, staff were able to make bracelets showcasing their diversity. Colored beads were collected by staff based on their responses to an additional set of questions also related to dimensions of diversity. The training was well received and staff enjoyed it tremendously!
