and Potluck Brunch
This Sunday, June 18, 2017, at 9:30 a.m., we'll welcome back the Mexico Mission Homebuilding Team and their families in a joyful, moving tribute to their transformational peacemaking journey. The students will lead us, sharing their experience, reflections, and song. Let's all support the MM Team!
All are welcome for the Potluck Brunch following the service. Bring something yummy to share. (Our Deacons are supplying the hot and cold beverages.) Let's all extend our warmest hospitality to the MM team and their families!

A Note From
Pastor Bev
The month of June is full of memory-making occasions. Get your cameras out, there are end of the year class parties, graduations, weddings, and for us here at SHPC, there is the Mexico Mission. If you haven't checked out their blog, please scroll down and click to see memory-making in the concrete mixing, stucco slapping, roof scrambling, around the campfire, and especially in those special moments with the Mexican children who hover around our team, looking for opportunities to play with the big kids.
It's a big experience to cross the border and to encounter deep poverty. It's a time of discovery for our youth, an opportunity to explore new parts of themselves, as they connect with others in new ways. We can all learn from their experience! We, too, can be builders. We are called to build up the beloved community and to build up God's world for everybody's children. I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday!

Katie Brendler, may God's loving presence and comfort abide with her and her family as they mourn the loss of Katie's dear Father;

for God's loving presence, strength, and support in their bereavement;

Those living in the shadows and fearing deportation, for safety, security for their families and children, a path to citizenship, and sanctuary;
Our country, for a way forward where we live our values of justice and equality for all people; for a well-informed citizenry; for government of, by, and for the people, with leaders of integrity, and for an end to hate crimes;
The refugees and displaced
, almost 1 out of 100 people in the world today, for safety, homes, the basics of life, and freedom from being scapegoated;
Our Muslim neighbors, subject to Islamophobia and hate crimes;
Our planet, the world's poor, all who suffer from disruptive climate change, may we continue our work to keep the planet livable;
The PC(USA), for the way forward to be illuminated, and for our mission and ministries to be salt and light for the world;
Dr. Doug Tilton, our PC(USA) mission co-worker in Southern Africa;
Our church, for the Spirit to continue to guide us and fill us with energy for mission!
Please take time this week to pray for those on our list.

Mexico Mission Return Service and Potluck
Our team is building homes in Mexico Sunday through Friday, and you can follow them on their blog
SHPC Mexico Mission Trip.
The team plans to return to the church parking lot on Saturday, June 17th in the afternoon, time TBD. MM leaders will make sure the parents get the ETA.
Please join us Sunday, June 18th at 9:30 a.m. for the Mexico Mission Student-led Return Service, and Potluck Brunch following the service. Thank you to those who have volunteered to set up and clean up, and to all for bringing something yummy to share.

Report from Session - June 14, 2017 Meeting
Finance- Doug - The final
Let's Talk Church Finance discussion will be scheduled soon. The Session has now studied church finance in depth, and will be preparing a report for the congregation with findings. A helpful resource was presented at the June 1 meeting and is available here:
Building and Grounds - Ahmed -
LMP Lease renewal is on track, with excellent church-tenant relations. Assessment of maintenance and upgrading needs of church and manse continues.
Family Ministries - Janel -
Youth improv night, summer mini-camp, and interfaith gatherings discussed. Budget is an issue for hiring a director and staffing our program to meet the opportunities God has given us.
Mission - Patti - Mission is thriving on all fronts. We look forward to welcoming back the MM team this Sunday.
Deacons - Kit - We're looking forward to the MM Potluck Brunch after the service this Sunday.
Moderator - Bev - Further Elder Education on healthy church, congregation-presbytery-synod relations.

In Acts 1:8 Jesus says to His disciples, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Presbyterians have heard the call from Jesus to fully commit to being faithful witnesses to the call from God to transform the world. We are called to be active in social and moral issues as we engage the world in the public square. Over the years much of our justice work out of this office has focused on direct advocacy with Congressional offices, the White House, and government agencies. This year alone we have met with members of Congress and their staffers on such vital issues as the travel ban, the Johnson Amendment and the federal budget. Over and over again, members of Congress insist that they want to hear directly from their constituents while also building a relationship with representatives of the denomination. While our presence on Capitol Hill is essential, we see the need to build political power with the church to advance a justice agenda and know we cannot do all of that necessary work from Washington D.C. Every member of Congress is elected from their district and their ultimate loyalties lie with their constituents. It is indeed true that all politics is local for politics is originated and determined locally.
It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that we share with you our
Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator Program. We created this program to offer a higher level of engagement and leadership development for congregations who want to build power in their communities, states, and amplify the voice of the faith community on the national level. Our vision is that every congregation will have a robust social witness ministry that is deeply involved in local work and has strong relationships with state and national legislators.
Over the course of the next year, the Office of Public Witness will connect with Grassroots Advocacy Coordinators to offer team-building workshops, issue briefs and grassroots advocacy and community organizing trainings. OPW staff will also be available to for regular consultation by phone to support Grassroots Advocacy Coordinators with the cohesion of their team and as they prepare for in-state Congressional visits, participate in local campaigns, and engage in congregational education.
