A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

From the beginning of the Book of Exodus much of the Torah's narrative focuses on the stories of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, the three Hyper-prophetic children of Amram and Jocheved.  Like the season finale of our favorite Television shows, Parashat Chukkat ties up some loose ends.

As if it were an early incarnation of Game of Thrones, this Parasha brings us the end of two of our favorite characters while, at he same time, meting out a punishment to the remaining main character. Indeed, Chukkat contains the death of both Miriam and Aaron, and Moses learns that he will not be allowed to go into the Promised Land with the Children of Israel.   Fade to black and wait until next season.  Alas, and thankfully, the Torah, and the story of our people, does not end here.

Many of us know the story leading to Moses' punishment well.  The Israelites, as they were wont to do, were complaining bitterly.  This time it was about a lack of water.  God tells Moses to "speak" to a rock and cause water to emanate from it.  Instead, Moses, expressing anger at the Israelites, "hits" the rock with his staff and the water comes out.  Because Moses "hit", and did not "speak" to, the rock, God refuses him entry to the Promised Land.  It is a harsh sentence indeed.

The fact that Moses' demise resulted from the failure to speak combined with an expression of anger is ironic.  Permit me to explain. Near the beginning of Moses' story we learn two things about him.  First, he has a temper that gets him into trouble.  This is illustrated by his spontaneous decision to kill an Egyptian taskmaster which ultimately forces him to run from Egypt. Secondly, when God first tells Moses that he has been chosen to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses' response was: "I am not a man of words...I am heavy of mouth and heavy of speech."

The greatest Prophet's demise is foretold at the very beginning of his story.

A few announcements for upcoming events:

My Friday class on Ethics will occur every Friday between now and August 25th from 10:00 am - 11:15. The Class is entitled: The Ethical Life: Jewish Values in an Age of Choice".  Each class is "Stand-alone", so if you cannot make it to all 10 classes it is fine.  There is a suggested donation of $5.00 per class and $40.00 for all 10 classes.  Among other things, we will learn and discuss how ethics impacts our food-production system, our penal system, and our personal and interpersonal relationships.

On Mondays, from Noon to 1:15, beginning July 10th I will be leading a Lunch and Learn series in the library at the JCC.  We will be studying Jewish Wisdom utilizing the book of the same name by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin.  Each class will be "Stand-alone", so you do not need to attend every class.  Used copies of the book will be made available for $10.00 each and lunch will be provided for a suggested donation of $5.00.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

AD JOURNAL

Our ad journal has been printed and distributed at the Gala.   Thanks to our editor PAULA HAIT for a fabulous job and to all those who took out ads and solicited them.

THE WEEK THAT WAS.....

After months of planning, the Gala celebration of the 5th Anniversary of our new building took place on a beautiful Sunday evening on Long Beach Island.

A full house of guests were in attendance to mark this special milestone in the history of our congregation.
The festivities began with a reception outside with drinks and canapes.

That was followed by a inspiring program in the sanctuary honoring our founders and builders.

Selma &Herb Shapiro (center) are presented their Founders gift by Rabbi Jay and President Rose Valentine

Honoree Sherry Fruchterman (left) receives her gift from Co-Chairman Ina Galer & Rabbi Jay

Builder Edd Dreyfus (left) with Rabbi Jay &
Past President Don Pripstein

Honoree Jeff Shapiro enjoys the moment with his grandchildren.  Click here to read more LETTER FROM RABBI JACK

A delicious dinner prepared in our kitchen by local caterer Foodies was enjoyed by all in the beautifully decorated social hall.  Dancing and a silent auction topped off the evening.

A rousing round of applause goes to the chairs of the event: INA GALER, DIANE HOFFMAN AND ARLENE SCHRAGGER and their committee and of course their spouses. They were committed to making this event a great evening for all and they did a fabulous job. A special thanks also goes to
David Powitz of Skipper Dipper for donating the ice cream,
Lexa Merson-Koel for the creating the centerpieces,
Karen Schwing for creating the video,
Patty Hoffman Brahe for designing the invitation and
and Arnie Galer, our photographer.

"My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me" by Jennifer Teege and Nicole Sellmair

Recognizing images of her mother and grandmother in the book, she discovered a horrifying fact that no one had ever shared with her: Her grandfather was Amon Goeth, the vicious Nazi - a man known and despised the world over.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC  Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as  "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.

Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.

Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
