Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom Realized

On June 19th 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to read the Emancipation Proclamation letting slaves know they were finally free. A celebration began as jubilation spread throughout the slave quarters. Every year since then, communities across our nation have celebrated Juneteenth.
Each year, the Syracuse community comes together to celebrate Juneteenth in Clinton Square. You're invited to join in this free celebration featuring live entertainment, an educational area, a culturally diverse food court, the Dr. Henry A Washington Healthy Pavilion, exhibits and more.
Cost: Free
The Juneteenth Festival will host its annual parade culminating with an entrance into Clinton Square from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday. There may be delays.

This Saturday morning, Dr. Yuzhe (Richard) Tang, PhD, an assistant professor in Syracuse University's College of Engineering and Computer Science, will lead a discussion aimed at middle school students about cloud computing. The event is sponsored by the TACNY in partnership with the MOST. TACNY Junior Cafe Scientifique features an informal discussion with a scientist, engineer or technologist every month during the school year. Students must be accompanied by a parent or adult. After the discussion, students and their parents are invited to tour the MOST's exhibits for free. A light breakfast will be served before the event. The event is free, but RSVP to [email protected] with number of people attending.

Downtown Farmers Market: Have You Heard About The Free Drawing?

This Tuesday marks the second week of the Downtown Farmer's Market. Throughout the season, the market hosts more than 50 farmers and produce dealers selling fresh, seasonal vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, cheeses, baked goods, flowers, plants, handcrafted items and more.
Each week, farmers donate an item to the Downtown Committee to use in a free drawing. Visitors are encouraged to try to win the "item of the week" by checking in at the information booth. This 30-minute express class combines intervals of strength and stretching exercises to target the whole body.
Urban Bootcamp

Join America's future service members from the U.S. Army in military-inspired exercises designed to challenge your endurance and develop functional strength.

Wednesday Walk: Syracuse's Irish History

Step away from your desk, learn more about Downtown Syracuse and get some exercise at this bi-monthly, themed walking series.
Next week's walk will be led by Micha Crook, director of the Syracuse Contemporary Irish Film Festival (SCIFF). Micha will take walkers to several Irish-influenced places in Downtown Syracuse and talk about its rich and interesting history.
For example, did you know the Landmark Theatre's decorative style known as 'Orientalistism' was invented by an Irishman who was returning from military service in India at the turn of the last century? Learn all this and more! At the end of the walk, walkers are invited to Kitty Hoynes to enjoy a beer or a whiskey flight and learn more about Irish history!

Directed by Conor Horgan, Queen of Ireland, is a wild romping ride of a documentary that follows captivating drag queen Panti Bliss, as she transcends the role of performer to activist. Part glamorous aunt, part Jessica Rabbit, Bliss is a wittily incisive performer with charisma to burn. Widely regarded as one of the best drag queens in the world, Panti became an accidental activist during the referendum campaign for marriage equality, which was passed by popular vote in 2015. Panti dazzles and delights as this documentary shares the tale of LGBTQ rights in Ireland, the 2014 scandal around "Pantigate," and how Panti becoming a leader in the fight for equality against homophobia in Ireland and across the world.
Doors open at 6:00 pm with raffles to benefit ACR Health and The Q Center, and the film starts at 7:00 pm.

Coming Soon: The PressRoom Pub

Herald Commons, located at the corner of Franklin Street and Herald Place, was once the home of the Syracuse Herald-Journal newspaper, and will soon debut a bar and restaurant named for the former newspaper. The PressRoom Pub will be complete with 90-inch televisions, 9-ounce burgers, outdoor seating and more than 100 parking spaces for customers! The menu itself is still under construction, but the build-out is almost complete. Once open, the restaurant can accommodate as many as 170 diners, plus a private party room. Customers will enjoy small reminders of the Herald newspaper incorporated into their dining experience, such as the large crane above the bar that once carried newspapers.

Armory Square Park Improvements
New plantings & brickwork
Armory Square Park, located just outside of Starbucks, is getting a new look! Last week, work began on the first phase of a renovation plan proposed to the City by the Armory Square Association. The park is getting new plantings beneath the trees, brickwork fixes and new locations for the benches. A future phase will renovate the planting bed adjacent to Starbucks as funds become available. The park improvements have been supported by an anonymous donor, the Armory Square Association and the City of Syracuse. And if this is a favorite place of yours to eat your lunch - don't worry! The benches will return when the improvements are complete.

Syracuse Crunch Celebrate Calder Cup Run
The Crunch lost 4-3 in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals
The Syracuse Crunch put up a tough fight against the Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals, however, the Griffins pulled away with a 4-3 win to take the Calder Cup trophy.
The Griffins led the final series 4-2; however, but the Crunch have a lot to be proud about. The Crunch were only down by one goal in each game the Griffin's took. In Game 6, the Crunch led much of the game, but the Griffins fought back from one-goal deficits three separate times throughout the game.
Congratulations to the Syracuse Crunch for an amazing season! We can't wait to see what next year brings!

Calling All Artists and Downtown Property Owners
Now Accepting Applications
The Downtown Committee is preparing for the second round of Art in the Windows installations. The Art in the Windows program showcases available storefronts while displaying the works of local artists. The Request For Proposals (RFP) for the new Art in the Windows program is now available. Interested artists and storefront owners still have about a week and a half to submit their proposals. The deadline is Monday, June 26.
The program matches vacant storefront owners with jury-selected artists who will install site-specific artwork in the windows. The Art in the Windows program is made possible through the support of the Central New York Community Foundation. The high-quality displays will showcase available space, highlighting business opportunities in Downtown Syracuse, while enlivening the city streetscape during the busy summer season. The three-month installation period extends from mid-July to mid-October.
