From the Board Chair, Tom Denio
|
Next month Dan Lewis will be 2U's Board Chair and the privilege of writing this article transfers to his very capable hands. Don't think I'll make it as a journalist but its been fun! Where did a year go?!
I
t is wonderful to have
air conditioning
in the Sanctuary and Palmer Room as of last Sunday for the first time in our building's 111 year history. Despite the heat outside, some of us attending felt it was actually a little too cool. Really! For some, this will make a real difference in their ability to attend during the hottest months. Many thanks to Steve Hier, Andrew Zallar, the Building and Grounds Committee and the anonymous donor who helped make this happen.
The June 9 issue of The Hammer included an article on the March on Springfield protest. A little local flavor here. Jim Simonis and I joined ONE Northside (one of the organizing groups) for their May 30 bus ride and protest. We ran into 2U members Gene Horcher, Nanna Cross and Adelaide Meyers at the Capitol. (Also ran into UU's from First, Evanston and Peoria.) Gene was one of the 34 people arrested for barricading the door to Governor Rauner's office. Gene remarked that he really appreciated the core protesters who handcuffed themselves together and sat on the hard tile floor for over 10 hours with no bathroom breaks. Gene was arrested about 11 pm for refusing to leave and is a proud member of the multi arrest club. The protest drew TV crews to cover the issues and highlight the legislature and Governor's failure to agree on a budget, to the detriment of our citizens, for Illinois' fiscal year starting July 1. Gene was protesting for a balanced state budget funded with tax increases on the wealthy and corporations in order to support important funding for social services. Thank you, Gene, for standing up for the least among us. 2U has been a member of ONE Northside for many years, we share our collection plate with them, and our own Curtis Smith is currently on their Board. If you're not familiar with them, check out their site: onenorthside.org.
General Assembly ("GA") runs June 21-25 in New Orleans this year. Rev. Robersmith, Darrick Jackson, Elizabeth Harding, Rita DeBoer and myself will attend from 2U. Adam will be back to conduct our services on Sunday, June 25. Rita and I plan to attend a session on the Settled Minister search for 3 hours. This year, we elect a President for a 6 year term and the three candidates are Rev. Jeanne Pupke, Rev. Alison Miller, and Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray. There will be a candidate forum and election on the evening of Friday, June 23.
Board Changes as of July 1. Thank you to Susan Zeigler for 3 years of board service as chair of one version or another. Susan's dedicated efforts and commitment have greatly contributed to 2U. Many thanks to Erin Rusmi who has served as Secretary for the past 2 years and also sings in the choir and is active in social justice. We will miss them both and welcome Tom Clowes as Chair-Elect and Joyce Haeckel as our new Secretary.
Susan writes: "
The community at Second Unitarian Church has been invaluable to my spiritual growth over the years, and being on the board was a profound spiritual experience in and of itself. Serving on the board let me see the inner workings of 2U and understand them and how decisions are made. This has been vitally important for me to understand what's going on in a deeper and more meaningful way and to have empathy for our decision makers."
See you in our nice, air conditioned church!

From the Director of Music, Amanda Thomas
|
I would like to thank the choir, and all the musicians who participated in our June Music Sunday. Without your willingness to put in the work, we would not have been as successful as we were. Congratulations for a job well done!
Members from the Unity Temple UU Bell Choir will be playing at our July 9 morning worship service.
Alice Muciek, the director of UT Bell Choir, is willing to let any members and friends of the congregation try out the bells after the service that morning.
The plan for the near future, is to borrow UT Bells sometime so that 2U may start its own Bell Choir!

Pledge Fulfillment Update: Only 2 WEEKS Left in the Fiscal Year!
|
Our shared support of this congregation is essential to living out our covenant and strengthening our community to meet the needs of our members, friends, and the wider world. Your contributions allow us to truly
nurture spirituality within a vision of the eternal, living out our inner convictions through struggles for justice and acts of compassion.
2U is currently
$2,160 short of fulfilling our budgeted pledge goal of $211,091 for this fiscal year!
Have you fulfilled your pledge yet? Our fiscal year ends on
Friday, June 30 - JUST
2 WEEKS AWAY!
2U relies on pledges for 70% of its income and we receive no income from our denomination. Please help us finish the year strong and minimize the depletion of our reserves by fulfilling your pledge today!
Alternately, you can send a check through the mail or place your payment in Sunday's offering plate.
All payments must be received by Friday, June 30 to count towards this fiscal year!
Thank you all for your community contributions!

Gay Pride Sunday at 2U
|
2U will be a busy church this June 25th! The Lemonade stand out front, the parade around the corner, and our service in the sanctuary. Rather than making you choose, we will be providing a simplified service that will Charge the congregation to take our values out into the world. To be involved in presenting this service, email

What's Under the Spaghetti Sauce?
|
Are our finances a bit of a mystery to you; kind of like the tangle under the spaghetti sauce? Here's a look at where the bulk of our money comes from - pledges.
Looking ahead to our new fiscal year starting July 1, we again would like to thank all of you who make financial pledges to support our church community, Second Unitarian. A few numbers for those of you who like this sort of thing and appreciate perspective on the church's finances:
Number of households pledging: 141
Average Monthly / Median Pledge: $142.63 avg. / $75 median
Average Annual / Median Pledge: $1,711 avg. / $900 median (half above and below)
Total Pledges: $241,324 (approximately an 8% increase over last year)
We appreciate that many of you were willing and able to support the Board's request for increased funds. 83 households were able to increase their gifts and of these, 58 raised their amounts by 15% or more. 42 households were unchanged while 15 households needed to decrease. And we also lost some households as members move to the suburbs, other states (CT, NM, WA, WI), and some are experiencing an unfortunate change in circumstances.
Distribution of Pledges:
$10,000 to $12,000 |
1
|
$7,500 to $9,999 |
7 |
$5,000 to $7,499 |
6 |
$2,500 to $4,999 |
11 |
$1,500 to $2,499 |
22 |
$1,000 to $1,499 |
20 |
$500 to $999 |
35 |
$1 to $499 |
39 |
Please do not confuse $ amounts with true generosity or think the Board views it that way. You never know, the $30 a month gift from someone might be a greater sacrifice than the $500 a month gift. I once canvassed a woman who told me how she had to delay her trips to the grocery store and empty her cupboards at the end of some months to make her pledge. Economic diversity has long been part of our congregational makeup. We truly do appreciate everyone's generosity.
It is great to have this level of increased support and fulfilling our goal of bringing our Minister and Congregational Administrator to the mid-point of the UUA's guideline ranges will serve us well. Thank you all for making this possible.

Library Book Notice
|
I've just added a "new to us" book from a recent donation entitled, This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral-Plus Plenty of Valet Parking!-in America's Gilded Capital. The author, Mark Leibovich, is the chief national correspondent for the New York Times Magazine. He specializes in national politics, media, and profiles figures in public life. Published in 2013, this book remained on the Time's nonfiction best-seller list for 12 weeks. The review in Foreign Affairs said, "Leibovich lets readers peep behind the curtain and see what goes on in the greenrooms and at the parties of the Washington elite. He reveals an ugly spectacle: tribunes of the people transform into corporate shills, money makes the world go round, and insecure arrivistes stroke one another's egos as they bathe in a flowing river of narcissism." If this looks interesting, find it on the library book cart with the call number, 306.209753 LEI. It's processed and ready for your perusal.

2U Member Survey
|
In an effort to get to know our congregants better, and to learn what motivates you to be a part of the 2U community, the Fundraising and Marketing committee is launching a survey. This survey asks basic demographic information about you and your household members (this information will be kept private), as well as questions regarding your training, work and volunteer involvement, and the activities that are of interest to you at Second Unitarian Church.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the survey - it will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
If you have any questions about the content of the survey, you may reach out to Susan Zeigler at
