The June ReTree planting at Workman Park has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 25. Sign up today!

On June 1, President Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. It's a symbolic gesture since the U.S. can't legally leave the agreement for four years, but it indicates that no work will be done at the Federal level to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

Although this is a huge disappointment, YVSC knows that implementation of climate action happens at the local level. We are inspired by the hundreds of cities, counties, states, colleges, businesses and organizations that have signed on to the pledge "We are still in," and we'll continue to fight climate change locally and encourage our community to join us.

Read on to learn more about what we're working on this month and how you can take action to show YOU are still in.

Clean Out the Classroom

SLC kids
At the end of each school year, YVSC spearheads the annual Clean Out the Classroom Campaign to collect gently used and unused school and art supplies for distribution to kids who need them. This year, 27 boxes of supplies were kept out of the landfill and donated to local youth-serving nonprofits, summer school students and Steamboat Arts Council Create Space.

Thank you to the Service Learning Crew of Rocky Mountain Youth Corps for their hard work in sorting the supplies!

ReTree Steamboat Community Planting Event

Mannequin Challenge
Sunday, June 25
9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Workman Park, 630 Yampa Ave.

Due to the high water level of the Yampa River, we have postponed our Workman Park ReTree planting event to June 25. We are still looking for volunteers to help plant alder, willow and red osier dogwood along the river in Steamboat Springs' newest park on Yampa Street. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and a fabulous breakfast burrito brunch for their efforts.

>> Sign up online.

In addition to this planting, YVSC has been working with the Service Learning Crew on a tree inventory of seedlings planted since 2012. We've also been working with Hayden students at the Elkhead Reservoir to care for the Ponderosa pine we planted back in May.

>> Check out the students in a "Mannequin Challenge" video showing all the steps in caring for and monitoring the seedlings.

Take Action

Take Action
Last month, we shared an opportunity to take action about EPA regulations.
More than 55,000 people from all over the country, including Routt County, shared their concerns about repealing, replacing or modifying existing EPA regulations. Thanks for making your voice heard!

This month, we encourage you to Take Action to fight climate change locally. Since June 1, many people have asked us "What can I do to fight climate change?" No small task and one that might seem a bit overwhelming. But we all have to start somewhere. Here are some steps to get you started:
  1. Calculate your carbon footprint. There are many carbon footprint calculators available. Here's a link to a simple one that not only calculates your carbon emissions but also helps you plan for reducing your footprint.
  2. Set measurable goals to reduce your footprint through energy efficiency, alternative transportation, waste diversion, water conservation, and choices in the food and products you buy.
  3. Encourage others! Talk with your friends, neighbors, local elected officials and business owners. Let them know how critical it is for us to all take action to reduce our carbon emissions.
  4. Use YVSC as a resource. Send us an email. Give us a call. We'd be happy to talk with you as an individual, business or group to discuss ways to reduce your carbon footprint and provide you with information to encourage others as well.

Water in Northwest Colorado, not a drop to waste

Sprinkler
The late spring snowstorm may have made our trails a little muddy, but local water resources officials say community water conservation will be important during this predicted warmer and potentially dry summer. All four districts that provide water to the Steamboat Springs area instituted mandatory stage 2 water restrictions effective May 1.

>> For more information about the restrictions and to find out your watering schedule based on your customer street address click here.
