4th Sunday after Pentecost

8:30 and 10:30 am

Russell's Ritings,

A popular preacher tells the story of a woman who phoned the TV serviceman and complained something was wrong with her TV.  The serviceman asked what was going on.  The woman replied, "The news is on right now and the newscaster has a long face."  The serviceman then said, "If you had to report what's going on today you might have a long face too."

In the last 30 years we have seen a 560 increase in violent crime, a 400 percent increase in illegitimate babies, a quadrupling of divorces, a tripling of children living in single - parent homes, an increase in teenage suicide, a drop of 75 points in average ACT scores, investigations into government corruption, terrorism at home and abroad, and on and on.

Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, "A people that values its privileges over its principles soon loses both."  Is America in trouble?  Does American have a future?  What kind of country will our children and grandchildren have?

I hope to see you in church this Sunday.  Sunday's sermon is "Seven Flags Over America".  The text is Jeremiah 28: 6, 8.

"....and the folks are friendly"

Russell

BOOK DRIVE FOR CHILDREN IN KENYA

Children's Books, etc. for Riruta School in Nairobi, Kenya

On the evening of Sunday, July 16, I leave for Kenya and Rwanda.  In September, 2014, many of you donated children's books that I delivered to an elementary school in the impoverished Riruta section of Nairobi.  The dilapidated school had previously been demolished by the Kenyan government as unsafe and then rebuilt mostly with support from the Center for Health and Hope (formerly the Center for the Church and Global AIDS).  Several of us from the Center attended its opening ceremony.  The books you sent were the start of a small library that meant children, for the first time, could take a book home to read with a parent or family member.  Some of the teachers and 158 students at this school are HIV+.  Some students and teachers get their only decent meal of the day at the school.

I am traveling to Kenya again with the Center and we will be stopping again at the Riruta school.  If you have books in English for young elementary school students that you would like to donate to the growing school library, please plan to bring them to church Sunday, June 25 or July 2 or 9, so I will have time to properly pack them.  I am also seeking small, stuffed animals for the youngest kids and some deflated soccer balls and frisbee disks for older kids.  If you would like to make a money donation to help this school, please make your check payable to UMC of Evergreen marked "Center for Health and Hope Riruta School" and place it in the offering plate or take it to the Church office.  Thank you for your generosity!  If you have any questions, please call my cell 303-246-8330.
