Julie Flett
is an award-winning Cree-Metis Canadian author, illustrator and artist. She has received many awards, including the 2016 American Indian Library Association Award for Best Picture Book for Little You, written by Richard Van Camp (Orca Books), and the 2015 Canadian Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Award for Dolphins SOS, written by Roy Miki (Tradewind Books)
.
Her own Wild Berries
(Simply Read Books) was featured in The New York Times and included among Kirkus' Best Children's Books of 2013. Wild Berries was also chosen as Canada's First Nation Communities Read title selection for 2014-2015.
The artist's latest collaboration, When We Were Alone, written by David Alexander Robertson (HighWater Press) is a Canadian best seller and received a starred review in the March/April 2017 issue of The Horn Book Magazine. Her latest board book, My Heart Fills with Happiness by Monique Gray Smith (Orca) invites children to find happiness in life.
Julie's process is to first sketch each image in response to the story. That is where the "play" happens. Once she has finished the drawings, she begins to work on the backgrounds and paints those, adding details and textures. All the imagery is eventually collaged together to make the final artwork and bring it to life.
Julie studied fine arts at Concordia University in Montreal and Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver. She lives with her family in Coast Salish Territory in Vancouver, Canada, where she works in a studio that overlooks a community garden. When not drawing, she spends much of her time walking in the forest, breathing the air of the place that she loves.
Julie's lead agent is Adriana, who fell in love with Julie's stunning palette and gorgeous collages and instantly decided that she wanted to help bring her artistry to publishers in the United States to ensure that
all
children are able to enjoy her remarkable work. Julie is likewise excited about their new partnership, and the potential for exciting new illustration projects, as she continues to develop her own work.
