Thank You For Supporting Our Literacy Leadership Breakfasts
Thank you to the 400 people who attended our Literacy Leadership Breakfasts in High Point and Greensboro these past two months! You brought us new connections and provided generous financial support. We look forward to you sharing news about Reading Connections with your colleagues, neighbors and friends.
In Greensboro, we heard from a student, Diana who came to us over a decade ago in her 30's not being able to read a word. Since then she has gotten her GED, an Associate's degree, worked in substance abuse treatment, and is close to finishing her Bachelor's degree. How transforming reading was for her life!
 We also saw some of the magic that happens when parents learn to read and pass that gift to their children - better preparing them for school.

Mark Your Calendars: Student and Volunteer Celebration is Tuesday, August 8
Please plan to attend this year's Student and Volunteer Celebration on Tuesday, August 8 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The event will be held at the Fellowship Hall of the West Market Street United Methodist Church. Dinner will be provided by Darryl's Wood Fired Grill.
 Each year we join together to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, tutors, and volunteers. It is a fun opportunity to get to know some of the Reading Connections' family.

Nominations for Student of Year Needed
Each year at our Student and Tutor Celebration, we award a "Student of the Year" trophy to a student in each program. If you work with a student who has exceeded your expectations this year and you would like to nominate him or her for this award, please contact your coordinator or email us at [email protected]. ESOL Class Writes About Visit to 911 Center
Recently, Carolyn Flynn's ESOL class visited a 911 Communication Center. After the field trip, Carolyn used the Language Experience Approach (LEA) with her students to create an article about their experience. Here is what they wrote:
Our class visited 911 Communication Center recently and we learned a lot of information, especially how 911 works. The information Portia gave us was very important and we should share it with our family and friends.
First of all, knowing your locations is the most important thing when you call 911. If you use a home phone, the dispatcher can detect your address right away. If you use a cellphone, you need to figure out your location by yourself. If you don't know, you can use a map app on your phone to find out. We also learned the 911 dispatchers map every first responder's movement and situation on their computer screen. Also, 911 can transfer your call intrastate, but not interstate. Former Student Speaks at GTCC Graduation
Some of you may have read in a previous newsletter about Reading Connections' student Tyrone who earned his GED this past October. He not only worked with Reading Connections' tutors, but he also enrolled at GTCC to reach his goal.
 Because of his hard work and dedication, Tyrone was chosen as one of the two speakers at this year's graduation ceremony at GTCC. He did a fantastic job and we are so proud of his accomplishments! Click here to watch Tyrone's speech. |

Student Spotlight: Annie Glenn
 Annie has been a student with Reading Connections since 2015. In that time, she has shown a constant commitment to her goals and a desire to improve herself. Annie not only receives literacy instruction, she also attends the basic computer skills class in High Point. Her cheerful disposition and her drive to succeed makes her a star student.
Annie's goal is to obtain her high school equivalency degree so she can work with children. Having raised four children of her own, Annie understands the importance of supporting our youth. With a wonderful and soothing disposition, we firmly believe that she will change many young lives for the better.

Meet Our Detention Center Coordinator Chevella Wilson
 We are pleased to announce that Chevella Wilson, PhD has joined our staff as the Detention Center Coordinator. She coordinates classes twice a week for male inmates in the Greensboro Detention Center.
Originally from Winston-Salem, Chevella has lived in Washington DC, Baltimore and Denver before moving back to the Triad. She has an extensive background in education and a PhD in Leadership.
Chevella is the mother to an eleven year old son. In her free time she likes to cook, exercise, eat, and read. We are very happy to have her on staff and we look forward to seeing how she improves our program.
