Maryland's New Higher Minimum Wage Rate Starts July 1st
The Minimum Wage rate is rising from $8.75 per hour to $9.25 per hour effective July 1st, 2017 (this Saturday). The rate will increase again next year on July 1st, 2018 to $10.10 per hour. While most employees must be paid the Maryland State Minimum Wage Rate, there are a few exemptions.
Chamber Board of Directors member Kelly Mitchell, Principal/Founder of impactHR, LLC has written a new blog post to help employers navigate the new rate and what it means for them. Mitchell writes, "according to the U.S. Department of Labor, roughly 70% of employers routinely violate wage and hour regulations without realizing it."

Howard Hughes Corporation Presents Final Plan for Downtown Lakefront
The Howard Hughes Corporation has just presented their concepts for the Final Development Plan for the Lakefront Core Neighborhood in Downtown Columbia.
Highlights from the plan include redevelopment of the American City Building and adjacent parking lot, the former Copeland's Restaurant and parking deck and the lot adjacent to Haven on the Lake. The next step in the development process is a presentation at a future Planning Board meeting.

Governor Hogan Taps Tony Salazar for Commissioner of Financial Regulation Position
Congratulations to Davis, Agnor, Rapaport, & Skalny, LLC's Tony Salazar, who Governor Larry Hogan has just named as the new Commissioner of Financial Regulation at the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR). Salazar's new position is effective July 5th. For the last 8 years, Salazar has lead the Banking and Financial Institutions Practice at Davis, Agnor, Rapaport, & Skalny, LLC.

County Planning Director Updates Chamber of Development Regulations
At our June Legislative Affairs Committee meeting, we were joined by Howard County Directory of Planning, Valdis Lazdins. Lazdins provided the group with an update on the County Development Regulations.
Clarion Associates is spearheading the first phase of the project, w
hich will conclude with a draft being presented for public input in Winter 2018.
Clarion Associates and planning staff are seeking community input and feedback through a survey available until
July 10th.
The Chamber staff and legislative affairs committee will continue to be engaged in this process and provide information accordingly.
