WES Events for #

WES, in partnership with Colas, an INWED Sponsor, is holding a Breakfast Roundtable at the House of Commons hosted by Mims Davies, MP for Eastleigh. Participants include Allan Cook (Chair, Atkins), Benita Mehra (WES President) and Caroline Gumble (COO, EEF). The debate will no doubt be lively and cover our theme of 'Men as Allies' in addition to other key areas for women in engineering.
The Telegraph, in partnership with the Women's Engineering Society (WES), and sponsors Scottish Power, Bechtel and BAE Systems have been seeking nominations for the Top 50 Women in Engineering under 35 (WE50), to be announced on International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) on 23 June 2017 in a supplement to the Telegraph national newspaper. There were well over 500 nominations and the quality was very high, making it difficult for the judges to choose the Top 50 list.
WES will be hosting an afternoon tea event (invitation only) to celebrate INWED and especially the WE50 on 23 June at One Great George Street. Following this, the Telegraph will be hosting an evening awards dinner celebration for the WE50 and the sponsors of the initiative at the Banking Hall in the City of London. An exciting day for all!

WES Annual Conference 2017
On Friday 12 May, WES held their Annual Conference at UCL in London. The conference theme was Get Connected: Empowering Women and Enriching Careers. Over 100 women and men from across the engineering and technical sector were in attendance, taking in the presentations and workshops. The day began with passionate talks from UCL Dean of Engineering Professor Nigel Titchener-Hooker and Northrop Grumman Chief Executive Andrew Tyler; who both expressed a commitment to gender equality in engineering and embodying the
#INWED17 theme, 'Men as Allies'.
Some sessions were focused on practical career issues, such as
flexible working and professional registration, whilst others saw women engineers reflecting on their own careers to offer personal advice on tackling difficult career decisions, such as changing industries. Throughout the day, the sessions were lively and interactive, with vibrant Q&A sessions, and energetic networking in-between.
WES would like to thank our Event Partner BAE Systems, and UCL Centre for Engineering Education for hosting us. Overall, it was a fantastic day, and we are already looking forward to next year's event.

WES Appoint Operations Manager
Roz Hamilton has been appointed as the new WES Operations Manager.
Roz Hamilton has been Chief Executive of the Royal National Rose Society for 10 years. Prior to that she was a business consultant and also has significant banking experience.
Roz, who started on Monday 12 June 2017,
will be a great asset to WES.

WES YMB are currently recruiting three new members! You will join an enthusiastic team of early career engineers working on projects including
#LottieTour and the design of a new poster to promote engineering to school girls.
It is expected that members attend 4 meetings per year and are able to volunteer time to work on projects in-between meetings. They should have the support of their employer or university for time off to attend meetings and financial support for travel. This opportunity is open to anyone who defines themselves as "young" in the context of their engineering career.

WES Young Members' Board
YMB at the WES Annual Conference
YMB members Kate and Yasmin attended this years WES annual conference, entitled 'Get Connected'. Many high flying female engineers were present making it an inspirational day!
Highlights included a talk by Madeleine Morgan entitled 'Confidence and Communication in Career Decision-Making' that went through the 7 things you need to be successful and tips from Tammy Simmons at the Engineering Council on how best to get chartered - part of the 'Registration and Chartership' talk. Kate and Yasmin chaired the 'When is a Good Time to Leave?' discussion by Dawn Elson which focused on her impressive career and what she has learnt over the years - the key message being to take charge of your career, and not sit back and wait for it to happen.
Overall it was a very successful day and everyone left with some new contacts, as well as top career tips.

WES Heart of England Cluster Event
WES Heart of England Cluster visit to Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) scenic workshops
There are still a few places remaining for the visit to the scenic workshops of the RSC, Stratford-on-Avon on Tuesday 27 June 2017 at 2pm. The workshops are where the sets and props are made for RSC productions within the carpentry, metal fabrication, paint and props workshops. The workshops build the walls and floors for the sets, and also make temples, tombs, trees, boats, decapitated heads and headless corpses, severed hands, thrones and statues. The workshops are currently preparing for 'Venus and Adonis', 'Dido', 'Coriolanus', 'Twelfth Night', 'Imperium' and 'A Christmas Carol'.

WES@UH - A new Student Group based at the University of Hertfordshire is looking for members to become involved in social, volunteering or networking activities.
Already in place is the WES "Roboteering" Team, currently generating concepts for a fighting robot! For International Women in Engineering Day we have talks in place with local schools and some further away!
On 7 July 2017 at 7:00 pm WES@UH are hosting their first networking event at the University of Hertfordshire.

The notion of being less competent than you should be or believing your success to be a bit of a mistake can be stressful.The sense that at some point you're going to be found out as an impostor can be crippling to achievement and may cause anxiety and overwork.

"How did I get here? I'm really not qualified."
It's called the impostor phenomenon and it's common: especially among women. While the impact of the impostor phenomenon is felt by the individual, the issue is a societal one.

IGEM appoints its first woman President
History was made at the annual general meeting of the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers when the organisation appointed its first female President.
Sheila Lauchlan is a self-employed Engineer and Director of Edinburgh-based consultancy, Perfect Dimensions Ltd. Sheila works on complex high pressure gas pipeline projects as well as writing procedures for multi-utility infrastructure works, and acting as Technical Advisor for companies operating on the Gas Industry Registration Scheme.
Born in Edinburgh, she graduated from Edinburgh's Napier University with a BSc honours degree in Industrial Design (Technology). She has worked within the gas industry since 2000, starting as an Administrative Assistant with Transco Connections.
A
former Chair of the Scottish section of IGEM, she remains an active member of the section's
management committee. Sheila also sits on several IGEM committees and is Vice Chair of the membership
committee. She is an Incorporated Engineer and Fellow of the Institution.
At the annual general meeting, when Sheila took over, IGEM also appointed four women as section representatives on its governing council. They were: Katie Higgins for Industrial Affiliates; Rosemary McAll for Midlands; Philippa Wren for South West; and Helen Fitzgerald for Wales.
IGEM is a sponsor of International Women in Engineering Day.

Where Women Work celebrates women engineers
International Women in Engineering Day sees top employers connecting with women and girls through exciting events and workshops.
AECOM is sponsoring a live webinar chaired by Roma Agrawal from their London Structures team. Roma worked on London's iconic Shard and is a strong advocate for more getting more women into engineering. AECOM is also hosting 'Museum Lates' at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.
GKN is releasing an inspiring diversity video for INWED.
Schneider Electric is promoting their many initiatives on INWED including diversity days, excellent maternity leave options and their women in leadership programme. Global drinks company
Diageo is hosting female students at one of their Scottish Distilleries.

Gender Scan 2017
Make a difference for gender balance in the high-tech sector.
Each year, Gender Scan demonstrates that gender balance boosts performances and well-being at work. In 2016, top decision makers from the public and private sectors quoted Gender Scan's indicators to highlight the importance of gender balance as a "performance and growth enabler" (P. Gattaz, president of MEDEF, leading French entrepreneur organization) and a "must both for economies and women, which must be enabled to contribute equally in STEM sectors"( L. Rossignol, Minister of Women's Rights).
Your participation is essential and could make a real difference to keep on building up awareness and mobilising decision-makers. In return, you get a chance to be among the first to receive results and to be invited to one of the conferences that will be organised in Europe. A questionnaire will be available for smartphone, PC, and tablets until 18 July 2017. It is dynamically generated, to be adjusted to each respondent characteristics, hence time needed for completion ranges between 7 to 20 minutes depending on the respondent's profile.

Siemens SeeWomen
On Monday 5 June 2017 Siemens hosted a specially developed live stage show presented by well-known scientist and TV/radio presenter Fran Scott, to inspire young girls to challenge gender stereotypes and pursue STEM careers.
|
|
The interactive, curriculum-linked stage production took the audience on a journey into a world of STEM and celebrated the contribution of women in STEM, with educational and electrifying live experiments. The 'SeeWomen' stage show placed the spotlight on modern STEM female role models in Siemens and beyond. The event was introduced by Maria Ferraro, the first female Chief Financial Officer for Siemens UK.
The Siemens SeeWomen project is a unique collaboration with the Girls School Association and was launched with a live stage show on International Women's Day 2016 at Withington Girls School, Manchester. The shows have been delivered across the UK in schools and selected venues including the Big Bang Festival, with the involvement of Siemens apprentices. 'SeeWomen' has now reached over 1,000 girls at 19 state and independent schools.
To ensure the impact of the show extends beyond the live shows and to help maintain its legacy, for the next phase of the project Siemens will provide free training for selected volunteer female role models, Siemens employees, and teachers to deliver an adapted classroom ready version of the live show in schools around the UK.

Get Set for Teaching the Technical Routes
A fully funded education and training foundation programme to help you recruit graduates and experienced professionals into teaching.
T
he SET for Teaching Success programme, delivered across two Hubs, emfec in the Midlands and South and Blackburn College across the North, will focus on those careers within the relevant routes of the Sainsbury Review, Science, Engineering and Technology (SET). The programme will help grow the capacity of your organisation, ensuring you are ready for, and benefit from, the changes the Review will bring.
Programme funding will support the recruitment, training, coaching and mentoring of students, and/or experienced professionals, who will teach SET subject areas. The trainees will leave the year-long programme with a PGCE in post-compulsory education and training.

SMASHfestUK
Are you an engineer based in Yorkshire or the surrounding area, who would like to run an activity at Bradford Science Festival?
SMASHfestUK's specific aim is to increase diversity and widen participation in STEM through the Arts. We're currently on tour (sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the UK Space Agency) and running a zone at the Bradford Science Festival on 15-16 July.
Each year
SMASHfestUK focuses on a different storyline based on a hyperrealistic natural disaster, exploring how to understand the phenomena, survive the event and rebuild society afterwards. This year's story is 'Supervolcano', with an extended narrative bringing in our previous theme 'Asteroid'. SMASHfestUK uses a STEAM approach, creating art installations, experiments and games, with an engineering core of the festival - the 'Survival Village'.
We're still recruiting local engineers to engage the public in July, running activities about how to survive and rebuild after a natural disaster. If you're interested (or know anyone that may be!) email:

Channel 4 have just finished filming Episode 1 of Escape and are in the final stages of casting. They are looking for a few brilliant female engineers to boost their final episode, which will be filmed in September.
