Here is this month's Bible-a-month Extra. Read on to find out how you are influencing a country with the Word of God....

July 2017: Honduras
Honduras is one of the most violent countries in the world. This month your support will help bring transformation by providing specially designed Scriptures for police, military and prisoners.

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. There is high underemployment and over half of the population lives in poverty. Most people live in the mountainous areas in the western half of the country. While the majority of children go to school, the quality of education is poor and the levels of drop-out and class repetition is high.

The country is extremely susceptible to dangerous hurricanes and floods. In 1998 Honduras was devastated by Hurricane Mitch, which killed about 5,600 people. Since then the country's economy has slowly been recovering.

Honduras is one of the most violent countries in the world, with one of the highest murder rates. The police department has been accused of being one of the most corrupt institutions in the country. Jails are overpopulated, with many prisoners kept in inhuman conditions.

The Bible Society of Honduras has been inspired to take action; to see their country transformed from a place of violence to one of peace and harmony. A project was set up to influence the justice system with the Word of God. Bibles and study materials are being given to those serving in the police and the armed forces, and also to those spending time in prison.

How is the Word of God impacting Honduras?

When this project started Honduras was the most violent country in the world. In 2014 San Pedro Sula was known as 'the world's capital city of crime' or 'the murder capital of the world'. In this city there was an average of more than 3 homicides a day.

But " today Honduras is not the most violent country, although statistics still show that we should not lower our arms" (Marlon Cardona, Project Coordinator of the Bible Society of Honduras).

While the government is making efforts to improve the crime rate of the country, the Bible Society believes that surely the Word of God has been a huge influence on this change.
  • The National Police has undergone a process of purification (several police officers had been involved in illicit activities, drug trafficking and murders). This year the first anniversary of the Christian Police Ministry of Honduras was celebrated.
  • The armed forces have a weekly celebration to study the Bible and worship God. About 20 leaders in the navy were trained to share the Word of God. The Commander General issued orders to set aside two hours a week for studies and now once a month there is a prayer meeting.
  • In prisons the Gospel of Mark is being studied. Since 2016 more than 1,200 inmates have been involved and many have passed their learning on to others. The situation in prisons has improved.
  • Now the Bible Society has extended this project, working with children and young people to prevent violence. Teaching of Biblical values is now happening in schools and colleges. Teachers and parents are amazed by how the levels of violence are decreasing in their communities.

Canales is a Commander in the Honduran Navy. His life was transformed when he was given a Bible by the Bible Society of Honduras. Here's what he had to say:

"I was a womanizer and a drunkard. I lived a disorderly life. I received the Word of God and my life has been transformed. Today I am a completely different man, a servant of God, a good father and husband - thank Jesus. I am fulfilling a purpose of God here in the Navy but my desire is to serve God. I want to start working with young people and build them a soccer field, get uniforms and sports equipment and preach the Word of God. I am sure I have a special calling to serve God; I do not know when but I am ready to serve."

We have seen incredible scenes from police and military events in Honduras. There is a hunger for God's Word and a desire to see change. Watch this video from the main prison in Honduras where Milton Valle, a famous Honduran Christian singer, leads an event. The Bible Society has delivered Bibles to this prison and a group of Christian leaders have been running Bible Studies.

The words being sung are translated as,

 "Change the atmosphere.
Visit my life, visit my house, visit my land, visit this place, visit us.
Visit us, Oh God, with the dew of your glory; visit us."

Pray Pray

Please pray for this work...

  • For the staff and volunteers of the Bible Society of Honduras who are giving out Bibles. Ask God to protect them and inspire them.
  • For the justice system in Honduras, that corruption would be stopped and men and women would lead and govern with love and truth.
  • Giving out Bibles seems like a simple project. Thank God that when His Word is placed in someone's hands - whether those of a prisoner or a police officer - lives are transformed. Pray that this will continue.
