June 2017
Hello ISANNE friends,

This has been a busy year for ISANNE and for our schools. As you reflect on your school's year, we want to take this opportunity to recognize our members, schools and corporate partners for helping us throughout this past year to design and present high-quality, affordable professional development offerings close to home.

You recommended some great speakers this year who received strong reviews from our participants. These included Dr. Chris Jernstedt's talk to School Heads on "Learning, Teaching and the Brain," Christine Miller's presentation to Student Life Leaders on  "Anxiety and Depression in Adolescents,"  Cindy Pierce's presentation on "Healthy Sexuality," Alex Myers, this month's guest blogger, and Sarah Huckman who shared their personal stories at the "Transgender Policy Conference,"  David Grant on assessment and Whit Mitchell on the DISC and "Having Difficult conversations." These are national caliber presenters and better yet, they live in our area of northern New England! When possible, let's go local and strengthen our region's name recognition.

A big  thank you to Holderness, New Hampton, Tilton, Brewster, Gould, Bridgton, St. Johnsbury, and Sharon academies and schools for hosting our events or sharing your speakers.   And a shout out to all of our Corporate Partners who sponsor, pitch in and support our work throughout the year!

Keep an eye out for our 2017-2018 major conference dates and mark your calendars. The committees  are already planning informative and engaging events for next year. If you are interested in helping your affinity group plan your next event or if you have ideas for a day-long workshop, please contact Deb Cook.

Lastly, we are combining the July and August newsletters in a summer issue-- look for it in your e-mail boxes in early August!

Until then, we wish you safe travels and a fun and restorative summer season!

Gender Identity and Campus Culture

August, 1995.  I approached the start of the school year with more than my usual degree of excitement and anxiety.  I stood in my mother's sewing room on the second floor of my childhood home in Paris, Maine, gripping the phone as I dialed the number for Phillips Exeter Academy.  In two short weeks, I was due to return for my senior year.  I was a student in good standing, a varsity athlete in ice hockey and lacrosse, president of the Jewish Student Organization, first tuba in the concert band.  I also was - or had been - a girl.   Read more .

Your cognitive capacity is significantly reduced when your smartphone is within reach -- even if it's off. That's the takeaway finding from a new study from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin.

The findings suggest that the mere presence of one's smartphone reduces available cognitive capacity and impairs cognitive functioning, even though people feel they're giving their full attention and focus to the task at hand. "We see a linear trend that suggests that as the smartphone becomes more noticeable, participants' available cognitive capacity decreases," Ward said. "Your conscious mind isn't thinking about your smartphone, but that process -- the process of requiring yourself to not think about something -- uses up some of your limited cognitive resources. It's a brain drain." Read full article here.
