Head5Trimble acquires Innovative Software Engineering

One of the Corridor's fastest growing software companies has been acquired by a publicly traded California company to meet demand for its electronic hours-of-service logs in the trucking industry.

Trimble Corp. announced Tuesday that it has acquired Innovative Software Engineering of Coralville for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition expands Trimble's fleet safety and compliance solutions and allows it to offer electronic logs as a service, according to a press release.

Innovative Software Engineer, founded by CEO Hass Machlab, is located in the Oakdale Research Park. It has appeared four times on the CBJ's list of Fastest Growing Companies in the Corridor.

"For more than 15 years, ISE has dedicated itself to providing enterprise and tailored software solutions to its clients," Mr. Machlab stated in a press release. "Our Fleet Services products provide fleets with end-to-end solutions that solve complex safety and compliance issues. In  joining Trimble, we look forward to being part of an organization that shares this dedication and leveraging synergies that will enable continued innovation to benefit all of our customers."

Trimble's projected demand for ISE's logging solution stems from the December 2017 effective date for a new electronic logging device mandate by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The mandate is expected to affect 3.4 million drivers across the United States. The Sunnyvale, California-based company had 2016 revenues of $2.13 billion, and is traded on the Nasdaq quotation system under the symbol TRMB.

The newest location of Natural Grocers will open its fifth Iowa store in Iowa City next week on June 21. The grand opening will include various activities, food sampling and vendor booths throughout the day.

The first store to open its doors in Iowa was the Clive location in February 2016. Natural Grocers opened a Cedar Rapids location last November, creating 18 jobs in the community, and opened a Cedar Falls location last December. The company also opened a Davenport location in April.

Natural Grocers, which is part of the Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Market chain, is smaller than Lucky's and appeals to the niche of buyers keen on vitamins and supplements. It offers 100 percent organic produce and range-free eggs. It also features a mix of national and local brands.

In addition to shopping offerings, Natural Grocers also offers free science-based nutrition classes, health coaching, cooking demos and more.

The June 21 opening begins at 8:30 a.m. with gluten-free muffin sampling and vendor demonstrations that will be available throughout the day. From 4-6 p.m., the store will host an ice cream social with dairy-free options. The first 100 people through the doors will receive a free Natural Grocer's goody bag.

Mount Mercy University has announced the addition of a fully online Master of Business Administration program, set to launch this fall to better meet the needs of working professionals.

"Mount Mercy's MBA program is recognized in the Corridor as a quality program," Marcie Van Note, interim MBA director, stated in a press release. "We want to continue that same high quality and expand Mount Mercy's mission beyond the Corridor. Our MBA students have families, jobs and school, so the online option will allow more people to achieve an MBA while still managing all other things in their lives."

Classes will be offered in five- and 10-week sessions and are asynchronous, so students won't be required to log in at a certain day or time. However, weekly deadlines will keep them engaged and on track. Typical coursework will include interacting online with classmates and the instructor through assignments, videos, readings, discussion forums, quizzes, exams and email communication. Courses may also include live video chat and phone conferencing.

The program begins in 2017, and applications are being accepted now.

The Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation will host its first n
on-event fundraiser on June 25. This non-event fundraiser invites community members to support the Library Foundation with a donation without needing to attend a fancy gala event.

This year's non-event theme, "Choose Your Own Adventure...Read a Book," is sponsored by The Eastern Iowa Airport. Inspired by the popular children's book series, the Library Foundation asks supporters if they will take a hike, visit a park, visit the library, travel by plane or stay at home to read a book. Each adventure 'choice' is then paired with a corresponding gift amount. Anyone can make a donation or learn more about this non-event fundraiser by visiting the Library Foundation's website.

"Summer is a busy time of year, and we want to offer a fun and easy way for people to support our Library Foundation," Joe Conway, board president, stated in a press release. "We encourage people to get out and experience new places and things while supporting a great cause."

The Library Foundation provides around $200,000 to help fund library programs and services annually. Some of those programs include the Summer Dare, young adult STEM programs, preschool outreach, and resources like Lynda.com and ReferenceUSA.com.

There will be a break in the rain after noon today and temperatures will attempt to warm into the mid-80s. If there is enough sunshine, temperatures will be warmer and instability will grow.  A cold front will move through the state through the afternoon and will lead to another round of scattered showers and storms after 4 p.m. If there is enough instability, some storms could be on the strong side and produce strong winds and hail. If there isn't enough sunshine this afternoon, the risk for strong storms will be lower. Regardless, storms wind down close to 10 p.m. and skies will gradually clear into the morning.
