The Washington County Arts Council presents a Valley Art Association Exhibit Opening Reception on Friday June 30, 2017. Meet the artists from 5-7 pm. The exhibit will be on display through July 25, 2017.

Engine Room Art Space presents "Blaze Breakers" by Chloe Irla from June 1st to June 30th. Blaze Breakers is an ongoing, multimedia project that utilizes analog and digital processes to distort, degrade, and destroy the color blaze orange. Textile manipulation, digital image capturing, Instagram filtering and compression, traditional 35mm film processes, and projection methods are some of the technical approaches used in this continued investigation. Irla of Baltimore, MD has been interested in the purpose and the message of the color blaze orange since her introduction to its use in farming and hunting in rural Maine. Irla's intent with this exhibit is "to present the viewer with the artifacts of this once bright, purposeful color. The technical means to destroy the color produce new translations of what once were vibrant, urgent messages. I am interested in blaze orange as a symbol of safety amidst danger: its visibility suggests that one be cautious of their surroundings. What happens if this color fails to communicate its message?" - from Irla's artist statement.

Cymbeline, also known as Cymbeline, King of Britain, is set in Ancient Britain and based on myth and legend. Although listed as a tragedy in the First Folio, modern critics often classify Cymbeline as a romance or even a comedy. Like Othello and The Winter's Tale, it deals with the themes of innocence and jealousy. Experience daring sword fights, beautiful costumes, and attend the event of the summer!

Salute to Independence

The 32nd Annual "Salute to Independence" concert, presented by the
Maryland Symphony Orchestra
, will be held on Saturday, July 1st at the
Antietam National Battlefield
in
Sharpsburg, Maryland
. This
#FREE
concert
begins at 7:30 p.m. and is followed by the most spectacular
#fireworks
display in the region produced by Bay Fireworks of Farmingdale, NY.
Music Director Elizabeth Schulze has programmed a concert that will honor, through words and music, the men and women who have served our country in the past, and those who are currently members of the United States Armed Forces.
The "Salute to Independence" has become one of Maryland's most patriotic outdoor events.

An Exhibition of Paintings, Prints, & Turned Wood

The Shepherdstown Community Club (War Memorial Building), 102 E. German St., Shepherdstown, WV, hosts a four day exhibition of new works by artists Susan Carney, Mark Muse and Neil Super. The exhibit runs Thursday, July 6th through Sunday, July 9th. Exhibit hours are 10am-8pm Thursday and Friday, 9am-9pm Saturday, and 9am-5pm Sunday.
There will be an ARTISTS' RECEPTION on Saturday, July 8th, from 5pm-9pm with live music and refreshments

Plein Air Painting with Philip Lindsey
Washington County Museum of Fine Arts

Rain Date: Saturday, August 12, 2017
Explore technique, process, and theory of open air (plein air) painting in a relaxed atmosphere at beautiful City Park Lake. Participants will be led through a step-by-step process of painting on location from direct observation. All stages of the painting process will be addressed, from start to finish. Workshop attendees will have the option of completing one or two paintings during the workshop.
Supply List: 2 canvases/supports, basic set of oil or acrylic paints (studio size tubes), basic set of brushes, a flat palette, palette knife, easel, small containers of mineral spirits if working in oil, or small containers of water if working in acrylic, rags/paper towels.
Optional Supplies: chair/stool, sunscreen, hat, bug repellent.
Register by July 1, 2017! Cost: $45.00 non-museum members/$41.50 museum members.

Mason-Dixon Barbershop Chorus
at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts

Barbershop Harmony is a unique art form, with its roots from back during the turn of the century America. The barbershop style of harmony uses close 4 - part acapella referring to no musical accompaniment. Old songs with smooth melodies and natural harmony were written in the heyday of Tin Pan Alley from 1890 to 1920 which were best suited for the barbershop harmony style.
These songs were about the simple pleasures and emotions of life that an average singer could easily sing. Beginning in the small town barbershops, local country stores and churches throughout America, it was not long before the male quartet became a standard act in Vaudeville shows and other musical entertainments. Recordings of popular quartets in the early decades of the 20th century formed the heart of barbershop music as we know it today, a style that still delights the performer as well as the listener.
The Mason Dixon Barbershop Chorus is one of over 800 chapters comprised of over 35,000 singers worldwide. Living in communities in the surrounding areas such Hagerstown and even some from over the Mason-Dixon Line in Pennsylvania (hence the name), our chorus members come from many different occupations. Some members might be new, while others having been a part of the tradition of singing barbershop for over 60 years or more. Throughout the year the chorus performs at a variety of venues such as nursing homes, hospitals, civic events including the singing "The National Anthem" at the Hagerstown Suns game as well as for private audiences. Some of the songs we sing are familiar classics like "My Wild Irish Rose", "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and "Shenandoah".

This call is for Every Space A Story, a juried exhibit on view this October at Engine Room Art Space. We are seeking photographs that depict the beauty of old buildings and vacant spaces in the tri-state area together with personal stories, memories & anecdotes from the artists in relation to these spaces for the group show.
