Celebrate America's Independence Day at the City of Fort Lauderdale's FREE 4th of July Spectacular
Join us for a fun, inspiring event featuring live bands, a family zone, and dazzling fireworks as Fort Lauderdale presents one of the nation's most acclaimed Independence Day celebrations.
The 4th of July Spectacular takes place on Tuesday, July 4 from noon to 9:30 p.m. on Fort Lauderdale Beach at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard.
Starting at noon, the family zone opens with a DJ, music, bounce houses, water slides, face painting, human foosball, beach games and contests.
As the sun goes down, the celebration heats up with live music and entertainment. From 4:30 to 5:45 p.m., T-Wave takes the stage performing popular reggae. Then, at 6:15 p.m., Stall 4 takes over with a tribute to 80's rock.
Finally, as the sun goes down watch the sky light up with the City's fireworks show at 9 p.m. This dazzling pyrotechnic display is simulcast with music on 101.5 LITE FM and is an annual favorite for all!

100,000 Free Books for Kids!
Fort Lauderdale is giving away 100,000 free books thanks to Soar with Reading, an exciting program from JetBlue and Random House Children's Books designed to stem the "summer slide," combat "book deserts," and improve reading skills by getting books into the hands of youngsters that need them most. Fort Lauderdale secured the free books for children in our community by winning JetBlue's Soar with Reading Book Battle, a national online voting competition that pitted our City against Boston, Long Beach, and New York. Thanks to the efforts of our neighbors, visitors, and supporters, Fort Lauderdale captured more than 60 percent of the online votes!
The free books will be distributed now through August 31 from vending machines located at Carter Park (1450 W. Sunrise Blvd.);
Osswald Park (2220 NW 21 Ave.); the Riverland Library (2710 W. Davie Blvd.); and the Edgar P. Mills Multi-Purpose Center (900 NW 31 Ave.). Children and families may visit the vending machines as often as they would like and take as many free books as they desire! The vending machines will be restocked with new books about every two weeks. Plus, there will be titles in Spanish as well as books for adults. Friday Night Tunes Returns on July 21

Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection Event set for Saturday, July 29, 2017
The City of Fort Lauderdale is offering neighbors a convenient and responsible opportunity for disposal of hazardous waste, electronics, clothing, and household goods. Unwanted items will be collected at a drop-off event at Mills Pond Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017.
Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes common household items that contain toxic chemicals and therefore need proper handling during disposal.
The Salvation Army will be onsite to collect items in good condition, including:
*Clothing
*Linens
*Small household items
*Small kitchen items, and
*Dishes
No furniture, mattresses, or other large items will be accepted.
Proof of residency in the partnering cities of Fort Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Lauderdale Lakes, or Tamarac is required (i.e., driver's license or utility bill) for hazardous waste and electronics drop off.
There is no residency requirement for donations to The Salvation Army.
These drop-off events are critical to protecting the environment by reducing the volume of waste in landfills and preventing the contamination of ground water.
Mills Pond Park is located at 2201 NW 9th Avenue (Powerline Road) in Fort Lauderdale.

Starlight Musicals on Friday nights now
through August 4th
Each summer, the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department proudly presents the Starlight Musicals concert series sponsored by Bank of America.
These free outdoor concerts have provided a great way to enjoy the summer with family and friends.
The series features an exciting line up of bands and takes place on Fridays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the football field at Holiday Park, located at East Sunrise Boulevard and Federal Highway.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets, and coolers. We look forward to seeing you out there this summer!

Sewer Main Replacement in Progress
A sewer main replacement in the Tarpon River neighborhood is having an impact on several neighborhoods as tanker trucks are being used to vacuum and transport sewage. Neighbors may notice tanker trucks with hoses in manholes until the project is complete in early Fall 2017.

Always avoid standing water
Pedestrians and motorists are advised to avoid standing water and children should not play in standing water.
Potholes, open manholes, sinkholes, storm drains or sharp objects may be hidden just below the surface of standing water.
Standing water due to flooding, water main or sewer main breaks and overflows may contain potentially harmful germs and chemicals.
Exposure to contaminated standing water may cause health issues. Please seek medical attention if you suspect illness or infection.

Transform a parking space into a social place on PARK(ing) Day September 15th
PARK(ing) Day is a worldwide, one-day event where citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary social places to celebrate people and open space for a few short hours. By transforming space that is typically used to park cars, PARK(ing) Day encourages everyone to rethink the way our streets and urban spaces are used, stimulates creative placemaking, and raises awareness for the importance of creating walkable, livable, and healthy communities.
The Parking Services Division is currently working on identifying parking spaces for this year's PARK(ing) Day event, set for Friday, September 15, 2017, but we're getting
the word out early so neighbors and businesses who want to transform a metered parking space into a temporary pop-up library, a shaded place to sit, relax, and meet new people, a place to play games, etc. can start mapping out their ideas and designs.

Fort Lauderdale designated a Walk Friendly Community
Fort Lauderdale Community Builders are working on numerous projects that address our neighbors' desire to have a fully connected, multimodal, sustainable transportation network
that is safer for all travel modes, including pedestrians, and we're on the right track. Efforts to improve the City's walkability were recently recognized by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) who designated Fort Lauderdale as a Bronze level Walk Friendly Community.
The City, which is just one of four Florida cities with a WFC designation, was recognized for its commitment to improving and sustaining walkability and pedestrian safety through comprehensive programs, plans, and policies such as
Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale, the
Connecting the Blocks program, and our award-winning
Complete Streets policy.
To earn the WFC designation, community walkability and pedestrian safety were evaluated through a comprehensive Community Assessment Tool that assesses eight key areas: community profile; walking status; planning, education and encouragement; engineering; enforcement; and evaluation. The assessment evaluated existing walkable communities and provided a framework for best practices and opportunities to improve walkability.
As a WFC community, Fort Lauderdale has access to PBIC resources and technical assistance, has established a baseline to develop and assess future projects, and serves as a leading example for other communities around the country.
Fort Lauderdale is proud to join the 64 other WFC communities nationwide that are committed to promoting healthy environments and healthy neighbors. The City will continue elevating walkability in our neighborhoods to ensure walking is a safe, viable transportation option or recreational activity for everyone.

the City (see list below) as part of an overall effort to improve mobility and safety for our neighbors and visitors and to support the City's Vision Zero goal of reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our streets to zero. Given that bicycle lanes are often installed
adjacent to the curb directly parallel to homes and businesses, TAM and the City's Sustainability Division are sharing the following information about proper solid waste cart placement on collection days.
Bicycles are vehicles too
Blocking a bicycle lane on a public Florida street is considered blocking a travel lane. Since bicycles are considered vehicles in Florida, blocking a bicycle lane (i.e., travel lane) can pose dangerous conditions for bicyclists. When bicyclists have to move in and out of the bicycle lane into the general purpose lane, or "traffic lane," they are not able to ride predictably and place themselves at higher risk. To improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians, solid waste carts (e.g., trash, recycling, and yard waste carts) should not be placed in a
bicycle lane or on a sidewalk. Instead, carts should be placed just inside the curb line approximately three feet away from vehicles, light poles, mailboxes, fences, etc.
With the City's commitment to
Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale in mind, we encourage everyone to place carts properly and to walk, drive, and bike with extra care on solid waste collection days, and every day. By slowing down, paying attention, being predictable, and following the rules of the road, together, we can save lives and get to zero.

S.E. 15th Avenue safety improvements project underway
Avenue and Las Olas Boulevard.
This traffic calming and pedestrian safety improvement project
includes mobility, traffic calming, and pedestrian safety improvements along Las Olas Boulevard between S.E. 11th Avenue to S.E. 15th Avenue aimed at:
- Reducing cut-through traffic and speed in the local neighborhoods;
- Improving pedestrian safety on S.E. 15th Avenue between Broward Boulevard and Las Olas Boulevard;
- Reducing traffic congestion;
- Enhancing mobility to and from downtown and Fort Lauderdale Beach; and
- Supporting the City's commitment to Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale.
Project improvements are currently underway on S.E. 15th Avenue between Broward Boulevard and Las Olas Boulevard that include:
- Adding a dedicated left turn lane from S.E. 15th Avenue onto Broward Boulevard and from S.E. 15th Avenue to Las Olas Boulevard;
- Making signal modifications to facilitate better traffic flow;
- Improving the turn radius for trucks turning onto S.E. 15th Avenue from Las Olas Boulevard and Broward Boulevard;
- Creating safer pedestrian crossing opportunities at all intersections along S.E. 15th Avenue;
- Removing the stop sign along S.E. 15th Avenue at S.E. 2nd Street, reducing the crossing distance with curb extensions, and adding pedestrian push button lights to enable crossing;
- Installing new stormwater infrastructure and upgrading aging stormwater pipes.
Construction on this segment of the project is expected to be completed this fall.

Proper landscape maintenance helps prevent stormwater pollution

Landscape maintenance can be a major contributor to stormwater pollution. However, by incorporating the following guidelines into your lawn and garden routine, you can help prevent stormwater pollution and protect local waterways, while maintaining a healthy landscape with minimal or no impact to the environment:
- Plant native plants to reduce the need for water, fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
- Use organic, biodegradable, non-toxic pesticides. Use fertilizers with less than 2 percent phosphorous. Mix and load fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides on the grass, not on driveways or paved surfaces.
- Do not apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides near driveways, sidewalks, or any water bodies.
- Avoid over watering. It washes excess lawn and garden chemicals into storm drains that flow to waterways.
- Apply only ¼ inch of water to soak lawn chemicals into the ground.
- Sweep up excess amounts of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Never hose them into storm drains. Store left over fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other hazardous chemicals in a dry, covered area.
- Dispose of household hazardous waste and electronics at scheduled "Drop-Off Events." For information, visit www.fortlauderdale.gov/hhw
- Never dump lawn, garden or any other products down a storm drain. It is a crime and could result in fines.

Now Available: 2016 Water Quality Report
As part of the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires the City of Fort Lauderdale, and all community water systems, to provide its customers with a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), commonly referred to as the Water Quality Report, by July 1st of each year.
Customers who prefer a paper copy sent via U.S. Mail may register online at www.fortlauderdale.gov/wqr or call the 24-hour Neighbor Call Center at 954-828-8000.

| City of Fort Lauderdale to Chlorinate Water System June 20 - July 25, 2017
The City of Fort Lauderdale will temporarily return to using free chlorine in its drinking water system. This preventive maintenance procedure will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 and will end at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2017.
Free chlorination is a common practice for water systems using combined chlorine disinfection. The chlorination period is anticipated to be transparent to water customers; however, some may notice a slight change in the taste or smell of their tap water.
Some customers may also see water running from fire hydrants in their neighborhoods, which is part of the normal maintenance process.
This procedure will affect the City of Fort Lauderdale, as well as Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Port Everglades, Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, Wilton Manors, and sections of the Town of Davie, Oakland Park, and Tamarac (east of State Road 7/441).
The City of Fort Lauderdale maintains the highest standards to ensure clean, high quality drinking water is delivered to its customers. The City's drinking water meets all federal, state, and local drinking water quality standards.
