Walk21: Striking a path for emerging walkable cities around the world


Registration for Walk21 Calgary, the 18th International Walk21 Conference on Walking and Livable Communities is now open. 

From Sept. 19 to 22, 2017, the University of Calgary, led by a dedicated team of Institute members, will welcome delegates from around the world to experience what "walkability" means in Calgary, and discuss how walking connects people and communities, and can transform rapidly growing cities.

Dr. David Hogan was honoured on June 15th as he celebrates 25 years as the first Brenda Strafford Foundation Chair in Geriatric Medicine, and his retirement.

Funding success for Institute members 
     

     
Institute researcher Gregor Wolbring has published articles for The Conversation's global site, and recommends colleagues consider writing for the new Canada based edition. 
 
Dr. Stefania Bertazzon and  Dr. Warren Wilson recently received CIHR grants. Dr. Bertazzon will use the funds to lead the Walk Smart, Breathe Smart Project, and Dr. Wilson will host a five day workshop to disseminate research findings from an earlier study examining the health challenges faced by Nicaragua's women and children.

The O'Brien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary supports excellence in population health and health services research, while realizing the benefits of such research by using that knowledge to inform community, policy and health practice stakeholders. 

The Institute's membership includes more than 450 multidisciplinary researchers from 13 Cumming School of Medicine departments and nine other University of Calgary faculties, such as Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Kinesiology and Arts; health professionals in Alberta Health Services, and; research users and policy makers from municipal and provincial institutions. As an Institute, we share a vision of "Better health and health care" reflecting our two priority research areas of Improved Population Health and Enhanced Health Systems Performance. 

The Institute's success in brokering broader external relationships, with provincial and national interest groups, policy makers, research agencies, the media, philanthropists, and community stakeholders, further extends the reach and impact of our members' significant research outputs.
