Jody Armstrong
Jody Armstong (Kingston Police) was selected to represent Ontario in the 2017 Special Olympics World Games in Austria. He shares his experiences with us below.
You were chosen to participate in the 2017 World Winter Games, describe that experience.
Jody: Being selected to represent Ontario during the Final Leg for the world winter games was without a doubt a once in a lifetime experience and a highlight of my career. I had the chance to meet similar minded individuals with a common passion for Special Olympics. As long as the days were, on our mission of spreading the word about LETR and Special Olympics World Games, it seemed like we had just got off the plane that it was time to go home again. The Logistic team did an amazing job keeping us organized, on time and needing for nothing.
How many people were on your Run Team and how many countries were represented?
Jody: Team 7, dubbed "Team 007" gelled quickly as a team from day one. Our team consisted of one SO athlete, Tim Zavarelli, from Montana USA and 10 LETR members from 7 different countries.
What was your most memorable experience of the Final Leg?
Jody: The most memorable moment is when I had the opportunity to meet up with Team Canada and our Ontario athletes and coaches. I felt very proud to be Canadian and having a small role to play in supporting such great people in their Olympic goals and that no matter where you are in the world, meeting up with a bunch of Canadians makes you feel at home!
Being part of this worldwide movement is such a positive experience that it is a must add to any LETR/SOO champion's bucket list!

World Games Final Leg Recap
The 2017 Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the Special Olympics World Winter Games was held between March 9-18, 2017.
The Flame of Hope was carried through 47 cities, towns and communities across Austria before arriving at the WM-Stadium Planai in Schladming as part of the Opening Ceremony for the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games on Saturday, 18 March 2017. Click HERE to view photos/videos.
Barrie Police Celebrate Local World Games Athletes
Deputy Chief Carlson and members of the Barrie Police Service had the opportunity to congratulate Special Olympics Ontario athletes Michael Wimbs and David Whyne.
Together Michael and David represented Canada winning a Gold, Silver and Bronze medal in the downhill skiing events at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games, hosted in Austria.
Jade Irvine represented Canada and brought home a Silver Medal in the 4x100 snowshoe relay event. Barrie Police had the opportunity to congratulate Jade last week while at Andrew Hunter Elementary School, during the Special Olympics PAHL Sports Festival, which is aimed at getting kids into sports at a young age.
Congratulations and thank you for representing Canada.

Great Wolf Lodge Raises $132,000 for Special Olympics!
Niagara Regional Police partnered with Great Wolf Lodge on May 25th and raised $132,000 for the Provincial School Championships. Despite torrential downpour, the event continued and the unprecedented net proceeds of $132,000 was collected for Special Olympics. Thank you Great Wold Lodge for this incredible event!

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is ... still willing to line up and score a deal on accommodation at Great Wolf Lodge, all in the name of charity, apparently.
"The first cars were lining up at 10 p.m. (Wednesday) night," Great Wolf general manager Keith Simmonds said as cars continued to line up Thursday morning for what was to be the lodge's annual charity car wash.
And while persistent rain scuttled plans to wash vehicles, the hoses were put away and the sales of discount overnight and day passes continued. Proceeds from the sales of one-night stays ($160) and water park day passes ($60 for four) were to go toward the Special Olympics School Games coming up next month at Brock University and the Niagara Falls Professional Firefighters Association for its local community initiatives.
And despite the wet weather, lineups were long and stretched as far back as Clifton Hill. Originally set to start at 10 a.m., the decision was made to begin the sales of passes at 8:30 a.m., Simmonds said.
"We have 800 passes. They'll be sold out by 11 a.m.," he said.
Niagara Regional Police Inspector Marco Giannico is project co-chair for the Special Olympics School Games and couldn't help but smile as he watched the parade of vehicles under the comfort of an umbrella.
"All of the proceeds raised will stay here in Niagara," Giannico said.
