Every month, the AHA Insider showcases one of our employees. We want to give our readers an insight as to who works for AHA and what they do for the association.
Elizabeth Canda
I grew up in Canon City, Colorado and spent a lot of my time helping my family with our cattle ranch in Westcliffe, Colorado. As an active member of my 4-H club, I spent most of my youth showing horses, cattle, and competing in rodeo events. When I wasn't involved with animals, I spent my time playing the piano which ignited my love for various genres of music. Currently, in my spare time, I enjoy fitness and the outdoors. I love staying active whether its walking, hiking, gardening, cooking, or riding horses.
My passion for horses continued into college as I pursued a degree in Animal and Equine Sciences from Colorado State University. During my college years, I worked with the CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory as well as for the Legends of Ranching Horse Sale. During my summers, I interned as a Vet Tech at Ruidoso Downs Race Track working with Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Upon graduation, I took a position as an Assistant Race Horse Trainer where we trained racing Quarter Horses across the states of New Mexico and Oklahoma. After five years within the race horse industry, I decided to become a part of the Registry Services team here at the Arabian Horse Association. I am very appreciative of the team I get to work with and look forward to serving AHA members in the best way I can!

Certified Horsemanship Association's Level One Horsemanship Manual Available in Spanish
The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) offers four levels of horsemanship manuals to its membership, including the CHA Composite Horsemanship Manual. In addition, CHA is proud to offer its Level One Manual of Horsemanship in Spanish. Since the horse industry has a large Latino population, and there was a demand for a Spanish horsemanship manual, it made sense to translate the Level One manual into Spanish.
Manual Compuesto de Equitación Nivel 1 is a 48-page book with illustrations by Susan Harris and detailed information on horse sense, rules for safe riding, parts of the horse and tack, how to safely approach the horse, leading, grooming, saddling and bridling, mounting and dismounting, basic seat and hand position, basic aids and horse control, circles and reverses, beginning the trot, exercises on horseback, elementary trail riding, and more. The book also contains a written exam and arena riding patterns.

Certified Horsemanship Association Creates Speakers Bureau
The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) has created the CHA Speakers Bureau, which is made up of CHA Certified Instructors who are available to speak at events inside and outside the horse industry. Speaking at events is a great way for CHA Certified Instructors to share their love of the horse industry, encourage additional people to get involved with horses, share their experience with CHA, and educate others about horses and horsemanship.
Speakers from the CHA's Speakers Bureau have already been busy speaking at a plethora of events around the United States, including various CHA Regional Conferences and expos, such as the Northwest Equine Expo, Pennsylvania Horse World Expo, Hoosier Horse Fair, Minnesota Horse Expo, and others.

AHYA Board Scholarship Program
The Arabian Horse Youth Association (AHYA) is working to find a new way to encourage
youth to participate on the AHYA Board of Directors. At Convention it was discussed to fund a scholarship program for those individuals that are serving on the board. The idea behind these scholarships, is to encourage the youth to participate and have an active role in AHYA, as well as develop them as future leaders.
With the right funding, we would like to award a $1,000 scholarship to each Regional Director. We are hoping to start this scholarship fund with $22,000. So far we have raised $14,700. Please consider your region donating to this scholarship fund. We would like you to join us in providing opportunities to reward those outstanding youth members who are the future of our breed.

New Racing Partnership Offers Perfect Start for Newcomers
Racing partnerships are a perfect stepping stone for new enthusiasts to the sport of racing, and a new one is now available that is particularly suitable for newcomers. Former Thoroughbred jockey and professional racing manager Amanda Roxborough has fallen in love with Arabian racing over the last several years, and is now heading up a new racing syndicate called Goldensands Racing that offers a one-year lease on three high-quality racehorses... one of them won over $17,000 last year at Delaware Park! The unique syndicate offers 20 shares at a base fee of just $400/month with a one-time administration fee of $250 (visit www.GoldensandsRacing.com for more details), providing all the excitement of Arabian racing without the high costs. Plus, members will receive positive mentorship, education, owner benefits (like back barn access, winners circle photos, owners boxes at the track, and more), and the best part: comradery and fun with new friends through social functions at the track, parties, and more!

Members Tales
Age is Just a Number to Henrietta Ellzey
Henrietta Ellzey is a petite woman but don't let her small stature fool you. Ellzey is a doctor that travels the world, helping to open up neo-natal hospitals. She also isn't afraid to take on new challenges, no matter at what age.
Ellzey first stepped into Martha Rattner's barn and started to ride and get into showing in her 60s. She had no previous background with horses and had to basically to start from the very beginning. Ellzey's husband Bill first peaked her interest because he had shown before and had knowledge around horses.
Rattner started Ellzey in sport horse classes, ranging from in-hand to Dressage, even Western Dressage. Ellzey rapidly exceled. She soon bought a horse from Rattner named Grace. Grace was eight-years-old at the time and was difficult for Ellzey to handle. With Rattner's help and training, Grace and Ellzey soon became quite the team. Their fourth time showing together they won a Canadian National Championship.
Not only does Ellzey love showing, but she is very involved with her local club. Without her club connection, it is possible that she would not have even gotten into horses. Her and her husband Bob can be seen at many club activities and meetings, willing to be the first to participate in whatever needs to be done.
Ellzey is now 72 and is showing and riding just as hard as a 20-year-old competitor. Rattner makes her ride without stirrups and run in in-hand classes. Rattner exclaims, "Nothing holds her back and she has grown a lot from being involved with horses."
Furthermore, Ellzey recently purchased a four-year-old that Rattner has started training to do Western Pleasure. She is hoping to break into the Western side of showing too to add to her long list of accomplishments. Ellzey has won quite a bit over her seven years of showing:
- Three Canadian Reserve National Championships
- 2014 AJ Baske Abella Sport Horse Mares Dressage Type
- 2016 HSA Amazing Grace ++++//
- Sport Horse Mares Hunter Type
- Sport Horse Mares Dressage Type
- Six National Top Tens at SHN and Canadian Nationals
- Five Regional Championships
- Four Reserve Regional Championships
- 12 Regional Top Fives
- AHA Handler of Honor
- AHA Handler of Supreme Honor
This list shows just a few things Ellzey has won. She hopes to continue to add to her list and looks forward to many more shows with her horses and her husband Bob helming the wheel of their truck and trailer, getting them all safely to the shows and Rattner's barn for practice.
"Once you become fearless, life becomes limitless."
