Amanda and Catie accept the Wellness at Work Award
Healthiest Maryland Businesses this month recognized AHEC West's employee wellness program as among the state's leading workplace wellness initiatives.

AHEC West earned a Bronze-level Wellness at Work Award at the 8th Annual Maryland Workplace Health & Wellness Symposium hosted by Healthiest Maryland Businesses June 2 at Martin's West in Baltimore. Fifty-six statewide businesses were recognized through the tiered awards program, which features Gold, Silver, Bronze, and "On the Path" awards.

The employee wellness program at AHEC West is led by Dorian Birkholz, Amanda Heavener and Catie Wampole. The three organize regular wellness activities, including exercise programs and presentations by nutrition and health experts, and distribute weekly wellness messages encouraging healthy workplace habits.

Susan Stewart, executive director of AHEC West, commended Dorian, Amanda and Catie for developing the innovative, engaging and fun wellness program that earned the state recognition.

"They put a lot of work into our wellness program, and all of the employees benefit," she said. "This has truly been a win-win for AHEC West and our staff."

AHEC West's wellness program has been the recipient of two wellness grants administered by the Allegany County Health Department. The first grant allowed for development of the wellness program, while the second will focus on chronic disease prevention and management.

Part of the broader Healthiest Maryland campaign, Healthiest Maryland Businesses is a statewide movement to promote a culture of wellness.  "Worksite Wellness" initiatives encourage employees and their families to make healthier choices, helping them reduce chronic disease and decrease healthcare costs - which also helps their employer's bottom line.
