PTSA News
Thank you for a great year!
As the 2016-17 school year draws to a close, I want to thank you all for being part of our Kang Community -- as a parent volunteer, a PTSA member, or someone who cares about a student at this school, or all of the above!  Our community is richer and more engaging for the various stories, experiences, and perspectives we bring to it.  If you would like
to engage in this community in a greater way in the coming year, please do so...and let us know if we can help that happen!

The PTSA has been an active part of our community this past year, and we look forward to continuing many of these efforts in the year to come.  We would love to have   you join us!  If any
of these areas of service and involvement are interesting to you, we always have room for more  volunteers.

These PTSA efforts are made possible by your investments of money and time...so thank you for making this happen!

Enriching the educational experience for our students:
  • Almost 200 students took practice SAT/ACT tests through Fear-Free workshops.
  • Dozens of students received personalized assistance with college applications in the fall and attended seminars on post-high school topics in the spring through our College Application Workshops.
  • Nearly $10,000 was invested in various academic enrichments touching nearly every department through grants for equipment, speakers and learning materials.
  • Participation in the Reflections Art Competition was high and four students' advanced to receive state-level recognition.
  • Four outstanding seniors received $1,000 Sheeley Scholarships to contribute to their future academic ambitions.
Building, supporting and celebrating our Kang community:
  • An August Back-to-School BBQ attended by almost 300 students and family members
  • About 200 parents signed our inaugural Parent Pledge, committing to provide and insure an alcohol- and substance-free experience for LW students in their homes

  • Monthly staff appreciation events
  • Senior Salute for graduating seniors and their families; nearly 200 seniors attending Senior Party
  • Two Golden Kangs (Outstanding Educator) and two Golden Acorns (Outstanding Volunteer) recognized
  • Extensive school beautification efforts coordinated by our PTSA committee and made possible by hundreds of student and parent volunteer hours
  • Emergency Prep supplies and materials updated, inventoried, and provided
  • Five student printers kept loaded with paper and toner; all classrooms supplied with tissues throughout our long, wet winter.
Facilitating communication between parents and the school:
  • Monthly meeting opportunities with school administration ("Coffee with Christina" and PTSA evening membership meetings)
  • "Parent Connect" nights in October
  • Bi-weekly publication of Kang Crier distributed to thousands
  • Kang Cards reminding parents of upcoming grade-specific information and events
  • A useful, up-to-date LWHS PTSA website that will continue to be updated throughout the summer.
Have a great summer!
--Mindy Lincicome, PTSA president

Spring grants benefit classrooms and students
The PTSA is honored to announce several grants made to our LWHS teachers and staff this spring. They include:
  • A grant to purchase sewing materials for teaching sewing skills to special education students.
  • Assistance with funding general expenses to facilitate a private screening of "I Am Not Your Negro" for all 11th graders in April. This documentary ties to US History curriculum about the Civil Rights movement.
  • A grant to purchase 90 additional young adult and adult fiction and non-fiction novels for literature circles that support 10th grade world literature curriculum and the common core state standards. This grant will help accommodate large incoming class sizes.
  • Half-scholarships to some astronomy students for an astronomy class field trip in April.
  • A grant to purchase a welcome sign for the LWHS counseling office.
  • A grant to purchase sheet music for a choral event.
Thank you to all who have contributed to these efforts through your donations to your LWHS Parent Teacher Student Association!

Kang Crier signs off for the summer
Unsubscribing after the last issue
This is the last issue of the Kang Crier for this school year. If you no longer wish to receive the Kang Crier, you must unsubscribe yourself. We don't automatically delete any emails from our database, even for senior parents. (The "Unsubscribe" link is in the footer of every issue.)

Privacy issues & the Kang Crier
Each fall in the First Day packet, parents and guardians receive a form from the district called "Directory Withhold Form - SS100." This form has check boxes labelled "Withhold [your child's name or image] From Public Release" and "Withhold [your child's name or image] From District Use." If you check those boxes, your child will not be listed in the Kang Crier, nor will any photos including their image be published. This includes any awards your student receives. If your child is in a group photo, they will be deleted from that photo. The Kang Crier newsletter primarily goes out to LWHS families, but any member of the public can go to our LWHS PTSA website and sign up to receive it; we also archive our newsletter on the PTSA website, which is accessible to the public.

Look for your first Kang Crier of the 2017-2018 school year in late August!

Farewell to seniors
Our seniors leave behind four years of academics, involvement in extra-curricular activities and athletics, and special friendships. This is a lot to leave behind! Most seniors feel this "loss" at the moving up assembly or at graduation. The up side of this, though, is that most of our seniors have plans for the fall. They are continuing their academic and social growth.

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
                                                You can steer yourself
                                                Any direction you choose.

You're on your own.  And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

from Oh, The Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss

It's been a pleasure working with the seniors this year.  We're happy for their successes at Lake Washington High School, and we look forward to hearing about their continued successes in the years to come. Parents should feel equally proud for all their efforts of encouragement and support. We could not have been as effective without help from parents. Congratulations to all!
