New Publication Alert: School's Out... Who Ate?

When the doors open at 11:30am, over 200 kids flood in to get their daily summer meal. It's a busy time - children can play games, join a reading circle, or enjoy many other enrichment activities while awaiting their turn to eat. This California public library may not be where you would expect to find this scene, but it's essential for keeping kids free from hunger during the summer time.

When school's out and the summer begins, nearly 1.7 million low-income children in California lose access to nutritious meals  that support their health and ability to reach their full academic potential.  Statewide, this represents 85% of children who benefit from free or reduced-price lunches during the school-year.

CFPA recommends the following policy actions:

1) Support Immigrant Families  (link)

2) Expand Summer EBT for Children (link)

3) Protect Expanded Learning Program(link)

4) Elevate the Role of Nutrition for Academic                     Success (link)

Healthy summer meals support student health and their ability to learn throughout the summer and when school is back in session. Increased participation in the summer meal programs could also bring tens of millions of dollars in additional federal funding to California.
