June 2017
Join Us for Delta's Annual July 3 Fireworks Display

Traffic Alert: Willow Hwy will remain closed to thru traffic over the July 4 Holiday, so please use alternate routes when traveling to and from this event. Please refer to the Eaton County Road Commission website for more details.

For the safety of everyone attending the annual Delta Township Fireworks display on July 3, Delta Township and the Eaton County Sheriff's Office have taken steps to increase security and reduce the potential for injury inside Sharp Park before, during, and after the event.

During the day on July 3, Sharp Park will be closed to motor vehicles. The Delta Township District Library lot will also be closed to motor vehicles.  There will be two entrances into Sharp Park. The main entrance from Elmwood Road will be open to pedestrians, and to vehicles holding a valid parking permit obtained from the Delta Township Parks Department. The second entrance will be at the West end of Sharp Park, at the East/West Pathway entry into the park and is open to pedestrians or bicyclists.

Fireworks, missile-like objects, weapons or firearms that are not permitted by law are prohibited in Sharp Park. People entering Sharp Park are subject to a visual inspection of their person, parcels, bags & containers, and clothing capable of carrying such items. You may refuse this inspection. If so, you will be refused entry into Sharp Park.

We would like to take this opportunity to emphasize safety in the use of fireworks as we approach the annual Fireworks Display in Delta Township scheduled for July 3.

Public Act 256 ( Michigan Fireworks Safety Act) took effect on January 1, 2012. While this law legalized the purchase and possession of consumer fireworks previously banned in Michigan, it also regulates the use of these fireworks. This act states in part:
1. "A person shall not ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks on public property, school property, church property, or the property of another person without that organization's or person's express permission to use those fireworks on those premises. Except as otherwise provided in this subsection, a person that violates this subsection is responsible for a state civil infraction and may be ordered to pay a civil fine of not more than $500.00".
2. "An individual shall not use consumer fireworks or low-impact fireworks while under the influence of alcoholic liquor, a controlled substance, or a combination of alcoholic liquor and a controlled substance".

For the safety of everyone, we ask that citizens keep these provisions of the law in mind, especially during the hours leading up to the Delta Township Fireworks Display in Sharp Park on July 3. This event draws thousands of people to Sharp Park and the surrounding areas, so there is a high probability of injury from the use of consumer fireworks such as bottle rockets, roman candles and other similar consumer fireworks during this event. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time at this event, so area law enforcement will be strictly enforcing this law.

This Act provides for the following penalties for those found guilty of violations:
(1) Unless otherwise provided in this act, if a person knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly violates this act, the person is guilty of a crime as follows:
(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 30 days or a fine of not more than $1,000.00, or both.
(b) If the violation causes damage to the property of another person, a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 90 days or a fine of not more than $5,000.00, or both.
(c) If the violation causes serious impairment of a body function of another person, a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 5 years or a fine of not more than $5,000.00, or both.
(d) If the violation causes the death of another person, a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 15 years or a fine of not more than $10,000.00, or both.

Delta to Update the Non-Motorized Transportation Plan This Summer
Don't Miss Your Opportunity to Provide Input
In our efforts to provide safe, efficient, and enjoyable transportation alternatives, Delta Township continues to expand its network of sidewalks, multi-use pathways, and bicycle lanes that connect residents to the Township's businesses, schools, parks, and other community activities centers.  In order to develop these facilities in an orderly manner, the Township relies on its Non-Motorized Transportation Plan (NMTP) for guidance.

The Township's first NMTP in 2006 provided a broad vision of a desired non-motorized transportation network extending throughout the Township.  The 2012 NMTP Update refined this vision.  From 2006 to the present, the Township has been successful in constructing several major segments of the projects identified in the aforementioned plans.  Most notably, the East-West Pathway and the Creyts Road Shared Use Pathway.  In advancing future projects, there are significantly more physical and administrative complexities that need to be addressed, which require more detailed engineering and cost analyses.  To this end the Township has engaged the services of Rowe Professional Services Company to perform the 2017 update of the Delta Township Non-Motorized Transportation Plan.

Through the course of preparing the update, there will be a number of opportunities for interested persons to provide their input.  Several small focus group meetings will be held, public surveys will be conducted, the plan's proposals will be presented at a public open house, and a formal public hearing will be held prior to adoption.  We will also invite participation through the Township's website and social media.  If you have any questions regarding the process, please feel free to contact Gary Bozek in the Planning Department by phone at 517-323-8560 or via email at gbozek@deltami.gov.

Broadbent/Saginaw Construction Set to Begin after July 4

The widening of the intersections at Broadbent and Saginaw Hwy are scheduled to begin after the July 4 holiday.  Broadbent will have intermittent closures over a four week period to accommodate the project.  During this time, residents are asked to seek alternate routes.

This project is the result of a traffic study conducted by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) which concluded the need for a traffic signal to assist with growing safety concerns in the area.  The completed project will include the new traffic signal and turn lanes on both the north and south sides of Broadbent Rd.

Delta In the News

All in a days work! Delta Township Fire personnel along with the help of employees from Delta Flowers helped to rescue six little ducklings that had fallen into a drainage opening near the business on Monday, June 26.

The mama duck was frantically calling for her babies so Evie, from Delta Flowers went over to see what was going on and was able to keep the babies from going further into the drain until Delta Township Fire Department came with the rescue net.

Thanks to efforts of the Delta Flowers employees and Delta Fire all six babies were reunited with a very happy mom.
