 Quotes We Love

"One of the joys of reading is the ability to plug into the shared wisdom of mankind." ~Ishmael Reed

"Libraries are about freedom. Freedom to read, freedom of ideas, freedom of communication. They are about education (which is not a process that finishes the day we leave school or university), about entertainment, about making safe spaces, and about access to information. I worry that here in the 21st century people misunderstand what libraries are and the purpose of them. If you perceive a library as a shelf of books, it may seem antiquated or outdated in a world in which most, but not all, books in print exist digitally. But that is to miss the point fundamentally." ~Neil Gaiman

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." ~Saint Augustine
Art Gallery

Our featured artist this month is Rhonda Gentry. Rhonda is known for her landscape paintings, still life paintings, flowers and other subjects. She enjoys painting intuitively; just letting go and getting her whole body involved. She loves colors, especially vivid rich colors. Patterns and textures play an integral role in her work, and when all three are combined with intuitive painting, it takes her to a happy place in which she gets lost painting.

If you are interested in displaying your art, please email somersartgallery@wls
mail.org for an application.

Flowers of the Month

The flowers that you see at the library are sponsored by the Friends of Somers Library and donated by local businesses. We thank Mary Ward of Houlihan Lawrence for donating this month's flower arrangement.

Friends of Somers Library

Concert: On Sunday, July 9th at 2 p.m., the Somers Library will present the band, " Hit the Roof," a keyboardist and drummer duo. Hit the Roof is the ultimate eclectic experience; they take their inspiration from exposure to different musical thinking, thus possessing their very own creative language. The duo offers an interactive musical program, presenting Jazz and Blues styles that emanated from the Harlem Renaissance and from the southern United States. Join us for this exciting afternoon of music. Space is limited, no registration, first come, first served.

Programs and concerts are funded by the Friends of the Somers Library, through your donations.  Thank you for your continued support!
