First Interdisciplinary Research Group Pilot Program Grant Awarded to Dr. Stephen Crystal to Address Scientific Challenges of Growing Opioid Abuse Epidemic
Rutgers' Office of Research and Economic Development has awarded its first Interdisciplinary Research Group grant award to
Dr. Stephen Crystal, who has
established a group of 25 faculty members from across many disciplines and units to address the urgent need for research to better understand the nature of the growing opioid abuse epidemic facing the nation and to develop effective, evidence-based interventions to alleviate the public health burden.
The funds will be used to stimulate the development of strategies and action plans in targeted topics
related to the health system response to the epidemic, including: medication assisted therapy (MAT) treatment and engagement; criminal justice and imprisonment-related issues; addressing disparities; increasing the supply of treatment providers; geomapping of healthcare, criminal justice, emergency medicine, and treatment data; and the development and testing of new strategies for intervention in moments of crisis.
The pilot grant program, which launched Fall 2016, is designed to support strong, collaborative research that would likely attract significant future external funding. Stay tuned for more information about how to apply for the Fall 2017 Interdisciplinary Research Group Pilot Grant Program later this summer.
