The mission of Saint Stanislaus, a Catholic boarding and day school for young men, is to form each student to Gospel values by nurturing his spiritual, academic, and physical growth in a place of sanctuary structured to embody the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

The End of an Era
Mrs. Susan Estrade
Mrs. Susan Estrade, assistant principal and alumni director, will retire from Saint Stanislaus at the conclusion of this school year.

Susan's lifetime commitment to the mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Saint Stanislaus is a living reminder of what it means to be a partner in mission in service to generations of young men.

Susan started here in August of 1972. She remained here as a teacher until May of 1981. She then returned in August of 1985 and has been a faithful servant at Saint Stanislaus ever since. During that time she has served with 11 different presidents and 12 different principals. She has been a classroom teacher, supervisor of instruction, academic assistant principal, assistant principal for supervision and activities, and assistant principal for student activities and alumni director. But job titles do not begin to capture the duties, responsibilities, and "extra jobs" that come with being part of the Saint Stanislaus faculty. Whatever her particular task at hand, Susan has always been a model of dignity, class, thorough preparation, and attention to detail.

While handling all of her responsibilities at Saint Stanislaus, Susan and her husband, Mel, raised two sons (Chris '98 and Kevin '99) and are now enjoying the rewards of being grandparents.

All of us in the Saint Stanislaus community are deeply grateful for Susan's leadership, guidance, wisdom, professionalism, and sense of humor. We wish her the very best health and happiness as she moves to the next phase of her life, and we hope she will visit often - especially for special occasions that she won't have to plan!

Marine Science Goes to the Pacific Northwest

Over the Mardi Gras break, Mrs. Letha Boudreaux, her husband, Perry, Harriet Bellone, and the Marine Science interns flew to Portland, Oregon to attend the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) and to explore the Pacific coast. OSM is a biennial event which hosts the largest international assembly of ocean scientists, engineers, students, educators, policy makers, and other stakeholders to gather and share their results on research, applications, and education. This is the 19th OSM conference and only the third one that has invited K-12 students to present at the conference on research they've conducted inside and outside the classroom.

This is the second OSM conference that SSC Marine Science interns have attended. In 2016, SSC Marine Science interns went to OSM in New Orleans and presented on an unknown species of pipefish that was caught during fieldwork. This year, the interns presented on the Mississippi Oyster Gardening Program at SSC. Our students designed a poster on their research that was professionally printed and they also prepared an oral presentation. They presented their poster in a scientific-style poster hall along with over 3,000 scientists and graduate students from all over the world. They not only have experience presenting at a scientific conference now, but they also have a scientific publication to add to their resumes! Only 33  students participated from 13 schools. Students came from Oregon, Washington, Texas, New Jersey, Missouri, Mississippi, California, and Netherlands.

Upon check-in to the conference, our students were immediately paired up with two PhD candidates, who served as their mentors for the day. These mentors provided them with a personal tour of the facility, gave them feedback on their poster and oral presentation, took them to various research talks and a visit throughout the exhibition hall where they got to interact with numerous universities, companies, and agencies within the field of ocean sciences.

After an overwhelming day of being immersed in the scientific community, our interns couldn't be that close to the Pacific Ocean and not explore. As one would expect,  Mrs. Boudreaux had the interns hiking waterfalls, scoping out sea lions, wading through tide pools, and getting up close and personal with Pacific Ocean marine life. The group went on its own Goonie adventure stopping in Astoria, and
then exploring Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach and Hug Point. They also hiked two miles around the majestic Latourell Falls. While on the Pacific coast, the group identified sea lions, gooseneck barnacles, limpets, sand dollars, mole crabs, mussels, red algae (Corallina and Porphyra), brown algae (kelp), and various species of sea anemones, snails, sea stars, and hermit crabs.
Been There: Lessons Through Experience
Reconnecting with Saint Stanislaus Alumni

A graduate recently told one of the great stories of Saint Stanislaus and the reach the school has on a global level. As he walked down a street in Paris, France, another gentlemen approached him out of the blue and asked, "Did you attend Saint Stanislaus?" He responded emphatically, "Yes! But, how did you know?" The stranger replied, "I'm a Rock-a-Chaw as well and I noticed the class ring you're wearing."

Whether it may be a monetary donation to the Character Fund, a designated or planned gift or attending the annual Benefit Dinner, there are many ways for you to help Saint Stanislaus. One such opportunity is to promote the school as an option to friends, co-workers, and other family members who want what's best for their boys - a valued education that emphasizes strong character formation that will enhance their success.

Our boarding program has seen a 20-percent enrollment increase from 2016 to 2017. The addition of staff and boarding programs has rejuvenated the energy of the dorm halls.  Unique boarding-related events are being developed which will continue to unite the entire Saint Stanislaus community and celebrate this special place so many have called home.

An ongoing series, Dorm Life, chronicles the lives of our boarding students here at Saint Stanislaus.

Artists-in-Residence and a Mardi Gras Disney Experience

"Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." -Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island

Recently, Saint Stanislaus was well represented at the 2018 High School Art Exhibition held at the Gail Keenan Art Center in Long Beach. Over one hundred artists from around the Gulf Coast submitted entries that were judged by local artists and professionals in the field. Junior boarding student Jack Winstead placed second overall in the competition while Senior boarding student Eason Zhang and Freshman day student Andrew Dufrene saw their artwork advance to the exhibition round.

"All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them." -Walt Disney

Mrs. Kristen Tusa, Coordinator of Academics, Activities, and Travel for our boarding students, along with the tireless Brother Eduardo Baldioceda and Assistant Prefect Mr. Gus dos Santos, accompanied 11 students to Orlando and enjoyed a week of magical fun at Disney World. Highlights included attractions and rides at the Magic Kingdom, encountering rare animals at the Animal Kingdom Theme Park and travelling "Around the Globe, Under Sea and Into Space" at Epcot.

Stanislaus Welcomes Lacrosse

After applying for and receiving a grant from US Lacrosse, Saint Stanislaus has officially welcomed the "fastest game on two feet" onto campus. Over 40 students (7th through 12th grade) are participating in the inaugural year of the club that is being coached by Mr. Brian Murphy and Mr. Peter Hoffer, both of whom have collegiate lacrosse experience.

Students are being taught fundamentals, rules and basic plays with the vision of hosting a "day of lacrosse" at Saint Stanislaus in early May with several teams participating including Brother Martin, Ocean Springs, and North Shore.

The future is very bright for the Lacrosse Rocks as they have been asked to join the Louisiana High School Lacrosse League (LHSLL) next year with a JV-B team (7th-9th grade) and Varsity team (10-12th grade). Teams from Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana make up the league and the season runs from January until early May.
Practices are currently being held twice a week on the Saint Stanislaus campus. If you are interested in helping sponsor the team, coaching, or if you have questions please contact Brian Murphy at [email protected] .

Athletic Updates
Soccer Rocks Win 4-A State Championship

The 2018 Rock-a-Chaw soccer team (19-3-1) took the top spot over all the land with a 1-0 victory over the Amory Panthers.  The victory gave the program its ninth Class 4-A state title since 1996.

Saint Stanislaus soccer players understand what the term consistency means. Saturday's appearance was their 13th berth in the state championship game. They have hoisted the trophy nine times (1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018).

The squad kept the pressure on offense at full throttle and the defense allowed just three shots on goal in 80 minutes of action.

SSC head coach Danny Patton said, "Defensively, we played a very solid game allowing just three shots on our goal. Offensively, we were not able to finish our opportunities. In the first half, we hit the crossbar on shots five times and their keeper made some really impressive saves. It was a one-sided match but we were not able to finish. I attribute that to playing three matches in seven days against three extremely talented teams. We seemed to be tiring somewhat late in the match; however, as this team has always done, they just figured out a way to win. I was very impressed with their poise throughout the game. They made their adjustments to the flow of the game and I am extremely proud of this team."

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half. Late in the second half, Carter Landry took a shot from about 50 yards out aimed at Brandon Elkins.
Elkins then fed Beau Rimmer who sent the ball past the keeper with a header to make the final score.
