The Federal Resource Management and Ecosystem Services Guidebook  website contains a link to a new resource: a U.S. Department of Agriculture technical report on the state of the science for forest ecosystem services.

Lisa Wainger (University of Maryland) and David Ervin (Portland State University) will discuss findings of a recent Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics report, The Valuation of Ecosystem Services from Farms and Forests, which resulted from an interdisciplinary project that they co-chaired. Using a conceptual value framework and the best available science, the project teams-comprised of experts on water quality, forests carbon sequestration, and pollinator habitat-developed reliable and consistent approaches for assessing monetary and non-monetary benefits of national conservation programs. The presentation will cover the process used to inform the systematic approach to quantifying benefits of conservation programs. It will focus on ecosystem service benefits generated by improved water quality and will touch on benefits resulting from pollinators and carbon sequestration by forests. Lessons will be reviewed to chart a path forward for ecosystem services valuation. Advance registration is required.

On behalf of Canada's federal-provincial-territorial governments' Value of Nature to Canadians Study Taskforce, Susan Preston (Environment and Climate Change Canada) and Ciara Raudsepp-Hearne (McGill University) wrote The Ecosystem Services Toolkit. The toolkit helps users determine whether an ecosystem services approach is needed to address a given situation, to complete a robust ecosystem services assessment, to understand what the results of such an assessment mean and do not mean, and to incorporate ecosystem services analyses and considerations in a wide range of policy, decision, and management processes.   Advance registration is required.
