As summer moves into full bloom in mid-coast Maine, we invite you to celebrate the pleasures of the season with family and friends at the Museum! Outstanding exhibitions await you, including an exploration of the development of the memento mori in The Ivory Mirror: The Art of Mortality in Renaissance Europe and Barkley Hendricks: "Let's Make Some History," opening July 20. This month, we put our programming focus on the act of drawing, with gallery talks on the historical and contemporary dimensions of this practice. We also provide opportunities to think about the art of collecting both in James Bowdoin III's time and our own. Finally, the Music at the Museum series continues with offerings from the Bowdoin International Musical Festival. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The Ivory Mirror: The Art of Mortality in Renaissance Europe

Closing November 26, 2017

This exhibition examines a critical facet of late medieval and early modern culture: the centrality of the macabre. The theme reached the apex of its popularity in the years around 1500, when artists working in a variety of media treated it in innovative and compelling ways. The exhibition focuses in particular on a group of carved ivories, but will also display related works in other media to demonstrate the widespread interest in human mortality.

Barkley Hendricks: "Lets Make Some History"

Opening July 20, 2017

Barkley Hendricks is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential American painters of his generation. His reinterpretation of portraiture and his reckoning with contemporary life were ground-breaking. For younger artists today, Hendricks's work provides an important touchstone as they articulate their own identities and question perceptions of race in America.

museum news

Talented young musicians from around the world come to Brunswick every summer to take part in the Bowdoin International Music Festival. This gathering provides these musicians with a unique opportunity to learn from world-class artists and hone their individual skills. Each year the Brunswick community eagerly awaits their concerts.

The BCMA is delighted to welcome five Bowdoin student interns this summer to engage in a range of different projects, programs, and exhibitions. We look forward to working with the students whose contributions to each aspect of the BCMA's mission are indispensable to our daily work.
