FEATURED OPPORTUNITIES OF THE WEEK

July 4 volunteers
Fourth of July Parade, July 4 -  Everybody loves the Fourth of July parade! As people with lawn chairs in hand head downtown to celebrate, while waving their flags proudly, two stalwart volunteers will help with road closures and organizing entries in the staging area near the Sample Gates. Volunteers serve from 7:30 a.m. to noon. To be at the heart of the parade organizing, go to https://goo.gl/Au2iPc to sign up. Minimum age is 18. Questions? Contact Nikki McEachern at 812-349-3739 or [email protected]. (www.bloomington.in.gov/parksVOL)

Cashiers -  Why not check out the Opportunity House thrift store . . . literally! Opp House needs you up front and showing off those people skills. Several reliable volunteers are needed to commit to regular shifts as store cashiers. If you enjoy working with people, are flexible, patient, have a good sense of humor, and can commit to a three-hour weekly or monthly shift between 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m., they would like to hear from you. No experience is necessary; all training is provided. Volunteers must be comfortable standing for their shift time. All proceeds from store sales benefit Monroe County United Ministries' exceptional childcare and family support programs. Teens are most welcome and they're on the bus line. Minimum age is 16. Please contact Nicola Payne at 812-336-2443 or [email protected]. (www.mcum.org/opportunityhouse)

Activities Volunteer in Dementia Care Facility -  Autumn Hills Alzheimer's Special Care Center's programming and activity department is looking for warm and caring companions for senior citizens with Alzheimer's and dementia. Volunteers assist with inviting residents to activities, leading small groups, assisting with big events and one-on-one visits. The residents enjoy group activities such as crafts, games, sing-a-longs, and sensory groups. Bring your smile and creativity! Minimum age is 18. Please contact Hannah Arthur at 812-335-4655 or [email protected]. (www.jeaseniorliving.com)

Joy Bhattacharya: Global Gifts Bloomington
Joy Bhattacharya is a volunteer any organization would be lucky to have. A high school student, she is curious, hardworking, and can be counted on to go the extra mile. Her work with Global Gifts Fair Trade store, Habitat for Humanity, and WonderLab shows only one small part of why Joy can give us all hope for the future. Joy balances her dedicated commitment to serve the community with a strong academic standing. Her thirst for knowledge extends to all aspects of her life, as does her passion for engaging others in learning. Joy's maturity and engagement are rare to witness in a person her age.   Listen here to this Story of Service on Activate.

Activate is a co-production of WFHB Community Radio and the Bloomington Volunteer Network.
