Field Celebrate Life - ONU

May 11-13 was a great time at Celebrate Life @ ONU!!! Eleven different districts showed up with their 7th-12th graders to compete in Bible quizzing, vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, communication, science quizzing, tennis, 5K, co-ed soccer, basketball, volleyball, golf bowling, table tennis, free throw, hotshot, homerun derby, chess and dodge-ball. As you can tell there are many events to help students find and refine their God-given gifts and talents.

Northwestern Illinois was well represented with 73 students and 21 sponsors/coaches. All the students did so well, and they presented themselves with great character and sportsmanship. Your doing great NWIL churches helping your students to grow and mature. Keep it up in the name of the Lord!!!

This year we had the opportunity to hear from LaMorris Crawford. LaMorris is a graduate of ONU and is currently the chaplain for the Cincinnati Bengals. He was a "straight shooter" in his delivery. The students really responded to him, his testimony and his teaching.

Below you will see where NWIL placed overall in many events. Please be sure to congratulate these students. A special thank you to all the coaches and sponsors who attended to help make this a great event for our students. Also thanks to Pam Smith for making my job so much easier! May God richly bless each of you for all the energy and time you invest in our NWIL students. To God be the glory.

Thank you to the Peoria North Side ladies for making shawls for General Assembly delegates.

Many delegates from outside the U.S. who attend the Church of the Nazarene's General Assembly and Conventions are not accustomed to air conditioning and remain uncomfortable throughout the week's meetings and services in the chilly convention halls.

To combat this, free shawls will be offered once again at the event. This is a great project for Sunday school classes, youth groups, or entire congregations, and no donation is too small. If you knit, crochet, or sew, a homemade shawl will be an important contribution.

Sunday School Discipleship International

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."   Matthew 28:19-20

As you are going,
THINK BIG: Every relationship, every interaction, all inclusive.

And make disciples,
START SMALL: You. Be one. Be a Christ-like disciple. Re-present Jesus.

Baptizing them, immersing them in Jesus,
GO DEEP: Pray. Empty yourself. Sacrifice.

Funding the Mission
For generations, Nazarenes have supported the World Evangelism Fund. Together, we've accomplished so much in our first 100 years. Join us on a journey into the next 100 years and partner with the Church of the Nazarene to make Christlike disciples in the nations. In our new plan for Funding the Mission, the World Evangelism Fund is the vehicle through which we deliver the message of hope - and your church drives our mission more than ever before.
Family Church (Church Plant)
Two years ago, when NWIL challenged every church to start a church my senior pastor wrote down names of two small towns that surround Princeton, Malden and Tiskilwa. When I saw Malden on the list I thought, "oh wow I should be praying about that, that is my town," but the thought was to pray, not to start a church. Princeton is only seven miles away and if its good enough for me, it should be good enough for them.

Prayer is a life changer. As I began to purposefully pray for the least, the last and the lost in Malden I was asked by some teachers if I would come and do a bible study with them. That was exciting, these were my friends, people I had worked with as a former employee of Malden Grade School. As I continued to pray for Malden more specifically, due to the prayer request of the teachers I had been discipling, two Malden moms stopped me at a restaurant and asked if I would be willing to meet with a group of parents who had questions about God, or more specifically their children had questions they didn't know how to answer. Within six months of praying for Malden two disciple groups had formed. Prayer is not only a life changer it is a door opener.

Extra Mile Church (Church Plant)
I had just returned to the Peoria area from Wyoming, and moved into a new neighborhood. I began to feel God leading me to do something to bring his word to these people so my husband and I began having neighborhood BBQS.

The first barbecue saw 10 people join us for fellowship and food and I quickly saw that there was truly a desire for God in these people and that someone needed to teach and love them. Shortly after the BBQ church began we moved to another home about a mile down the road and the church continued actually adding from a neighborhood near the new home, we presently have anywhere from 6 to 13 people attending every other Saturday and presently we are discussing once a week. The people want the weekend to serve in the community!

Our Mission:
The Extra Mile Church is dedicated to making Christ-like disciples, who will share the hope of Jesus Christ with their community, by serving their fellow brothers and sisters, through the study of God's word, Christian fellowship, discipleship and volunteerism.

BGS calls for prayer, fasting ahead of General Assembly 2017

The Church of the Nazarene will hold its 29th General Assembly and Conventions this June in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The quadrennial event will bring together thousands of Nazarenes from the denomination's 162 world areas. In advance of this important event, the Board of General Superintendents is asking Nazarenes around the world to set aside every Friday afternoon, from 24 March through 23 June, as a time of fasting and prayer for General Assembly 2017 and to pray daily during the assembly, Sunday, 25 June through Thursday, 29 June.
In addition to praying that every service will be blessed with God's manifest presence, please include the following specific requests as you pray:
  • Pray for global political stability as well as protection for our event. We also pray that the delegates from all world areas where the Church of the Nazarene has ministry will be able to travel with safety and without obstruction.
  • Pray that the intended focus of General Assembly 2017-strengthening our evangelistic perspective-will be realized.
  • Pray that the Lord will use this "sacred assembly" to revive and renew our global church family as we gather for worship each evening and Sunday morning, celebrating One Body, One Spirit, One Hope, One Lord, One Faith.
  • Pray for the Lord to guide and anoint the Monday Delegate Commissioning Service, the State of the Church message, and all the General Assembly 2017 elections and decisions.
  • Pray for the conventions that are a part of this event: Nazarene Missions International (NMI), Nazarene Youth International (NYI), and Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International (SDMI). These global ministries convene to strengthen both their mission and impact, as well as to celebrate the blessings of God experienced around the world.
  • Please offer continuing prayers for the official business sessions of General Assembly 2017. Pray that our delegates will be enriched by heavenly wisdom, the camaraderie of the spirit of fellowship, and continued commitment to the mission of making Christlike disciples.

Freedom Sunday

Over the past three years, more than 400 Nazarene congregations around the world have participated in Freedom Sunday, a day set aside for prayer, worship, and support around the crisis of human trafficking, which enslaves as many as 45.8 million people globally, according to the  2016
Global Slavery Index.

This year, Nazarene churches are encouraged to participate in Freedom Sunday on September 24, 2017, the last Sunday of that month.

The Church of the Nazarene's participation in Freedom Sunday began in 2014 in coordination with other denominations within the Wesleyan Holiness Connection (formerly Wesleyan Holiness Consortium). That same year, the Church of the Nazarene's Board of General Superintendents endorsed the Declaration for Freedom, a document drafted by the Wesleyan-Holiness leaders, including Nazarene representatives.

In the past, Freedom Sunday took place on the first Sunday of Lent. This year, the event was moved to the last Sunday of September to enable churches that plan traditional Lenten services to participate.

Congregations are encouraged to plan a Freedom Sunday at any time that works in their calendar. Freedom Sunday planning resources are available as free downloads through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries at ncm.org/freedomsunday.
