June Maintenance Update
The maintenance department crew have been working very hard. We like to take the time that is need to get the job done right and with a crew of 12 on any given day it can be a challenge.
The summer weather has finally arrived and the course is loving the temperatures. The greens have been vertically mowed and top dressed in this last week and are rolling great.
The new plant health and fertilizing program that we started last year has improved our fairways considerably.
Spiking and top dressing of the fairway areas, especially the areas that are more wet, is underway now and will be on going throughout the growing season to try and firm them up.
The detail work is getting attended to daily.
Thank you and good golfing,
Geoff Sheffield
Course Superintendent

Tee Shots seem to be the most popular topic we discuss at the HP Academy. We get tons of questions coming in that range from proper equipment to set-up to tee height. Though this aspect of the game can be overwhelming, here are a few simple tips to get you started...
- Avoid setting a curved spine at address.
- Set the ball forward in your stance.
- Half the ball should be above the top of the driver at address.
- Do not hinge your wrists at the start of the takeaway. Look for the shoulders to take the club back in more of a 'one piece' takeaway.
- Release the club on the forward swing the same as you would with your irons - Do not try and steer the ball
Remember, if you need more individual attention for any aspect of your game, please do not hesitate to ask any of our professional staff in the golf shop or find us online at

Highland Pacific Team Member Profile
Each month we will be introducing a member of the Highland Pacific team for you to get to know a little better. This Month's Team Member Profile is all about
Geoff Sheffield, Highland Pacific Golf Course Superintendent.
Geoff's career in the golf and turf industry started in 1988 with the construction of Olympic View golf club here in Victoria. He had been working in the equipment rental business when he decided to change things up. The contractor of Olympic View was in need of a Bobcat operator to help construct the course; Geoff accepted the challenge and got his first taste of working in the field. He continued on throughout that summer enjoying himself immensely.
Geoff's family had been planning on moving to the interior (which they did for a very short time that winter) but soon realized that Geoff really wanted to go back to the course that he had helped construct. He joined Olympic View's maintenance department for their opening season, working under Randy Page and Brent Rogers who would end up teaching him the fine art of golf course maintenance.
After several years of working at OV Geoff realized that this was a career that he wanted. He discussed his future with Randy and expressed interest in becoming an Assistant superintendent. Randy mentored Geoff in his position and guided him to get an education in turf management. Geoff enrolled in a program sponsored by the local Superintendents association and successfully completed the course. He also completed the turf management course at Olds College in Alberta in the winter of 2006. With that under his belt, Geoff became the assistant at OV for 4.5 years until the spring of 1998 when he took the responsibility of becoming the Superintendent at Metchosin Golf course for a year and a half.
Geoff had taken a second job taking care of a resort at Shawnigan Lake with a small pitch and putt course, pool, tennis courts and 4 acres of grounds. Him and his family did this for 3 years and then purchased their 1st home. During this time, he worked at Brentwood College School in Mill Bay as their Head of Grounds for 8 years. This was very memorable time for Geoff as a turf manager, because he worked at the college taking care of the sports fields and over saw the construction of a new field and several other major landscaping projects.
In 2006 Geoff was approached to join the construction of Highland Pacific golf course as their Turf manager. He wanted to get back into the golf course construction and maintenance of the course and accepted the opportunity.
