What is 'The End in Mind' at Roycemore?
"Begin with the end in mind encourages you to make your life extraordinary. Since your destiny is yet to be determined, why not make it extraordinary and leave a lasting legacy? You don’t have to change the world to have a mission. You just need to take advantage of and seek out opportunities to be your best self." From : The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Personal Workbook by Sean Covey.

As you walk around Roycemore School, you are likely to see a variety of ways that we visually emphasize the 7 Habits from The Leader in Me program that we embrace school wide. There are signs that reflect the 7 habits around every corner. Whether students are in the Lower School or Upper School they have opportunities to engage in conversations and curricular activities that tie back to the 7 Habits. The second habit, Begin With the End in Mind is a habit that we tend to think a lot about as adults, but is one that must be intentionally cultivated as a young person.

Across divisions at Roycemore, projects are built into the curriculum to help foster critical thinking skills and planning ahead. Our second graders recently engaged in a multi-week project to culminate their studies on simple machines. The students were told a story about a family of elves that work in a bakery. The elves loved mixing cakes but since they’re so tiny, they struggle to get ingredients like sugar, milk and eggs into a tall mixing bowl. Their end goal was clear, to get the ingredients into the mixing bowl. From there they had to work backwards to how they might design contraptions using levers, pulleys, wheel & axels, wedges, crews and inclined planes to achieve the goal. Students in our middle school finished their first semester passion projects recently, culminating in an Expo where they showcased their projects. As part of the process, every student had to create a timeline where they started with "the end in mind" and worked backwards week by week to plan what they needed to accomplish each week in order to reach their goal. This past week, Upper School students shared their experiences from JST (January Short Term), now in its 45th year. JST projects ranged from creating a 3D printer, to studying frog embryos and their application to cancer research, to writing a screenplay. The experiences were as varied as the students who engaged in them but what they all had in common was the need to begin with the end in mind. Students learn that before one can accomplish a physical creation, there is a mental creation that must happen.

Beginning with the end in mind is also an over-arching philosophy at Roycemore. We are a college preparatory school. Our goal for students at the end of their experience at Roycemore is acceptance into at least one of the student’s first-choice schools. We begin with the end in mind as we conscientiously prepare students year-over-year for the next step in their educational and intellectual journey. The interesting thing that is happening currently in education is that both universities around the country and the young people seeking to further their education are questioning the current college admissions process. Research studies have shown that scores on the SAT and ACT correlate more with family income than with student ability. Recognizing that standardized tests are not necessarily an accurate reflection of a student’s ability to attain success in college, many higher education institutions have already changed their process. The National Center for Fair and Open Testing lists more than 1,000 accredited colleges and universities that are test-optional, test-flexible or de-emphasize standardized tests as part of their admissions process. Even once students gain entrance to college, there are many conversations taking place nationwide about the cost of college and how well-prepared college students are for life after college.

Many business leaders are questioning the preparation of college graduates for the complexity of our changing economy. A 2013 Gallup poll indicated that only a third of U.S. business leaders believed that colleges prepared students with the skills and competencies that their businesses need. In fact, according to a 2014 article in Forbes, a top employer like Google doesn't necessarily even require a college degree of the people it hires anymore. In addition to role-related knowledge what else do they look for?

• Problem Solvers—being able to explain your thought process of how you solved problems and to make data-driven decisions
• Leaders—not necessarily by title, but by action, such as when you see a problem that you offer to step in to help solve it and also demonstrate the willingness to let others lead in order to reach the best outcome. The ability to communicate and engage others to be involved is a key trait.
• Googleyness—the ability to fit in with their culture, which includes pushing oneself outside of one's comfort zone and working in an environment of ambiguity.
• Intellectual humility—being willing to admit that you are wrong and care about the people around you

So, with this changing landscape in the higher education and business world, what is the "end in mind" for Roycemore students as they progress through our program and ultimately graduate from Roycemore? We certainly want our students to feel in charge of their future, to have options, to reach their potential, and to have the self-confidence that they can pursue the next step—whatever that is for them, whether it is the college of their dreams or directly on to a job. In addition, before our students graduate from Roycemore, we should have coached them well to become skilled communicators, critical thinkers, collaborators, and creators. We will be delving into these topics more deeply in conversations this spring that I have coined "NextGen Roycemore." Last week, you received an invitation to join us for the showing of Most Likely to Succeed on February 28th to serve as a catalyst to these conversations. I hope you will join me!

World Languages Film Festival 2018

Dance Marathon Fundraiser
This year, March 9–11, Northwestern University Dance Marathon (NUDM) is partnering with Cradles to Crayons as its primary beneficiary. Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization in Chicago that provides children age 0 through 12 living in low income and at risk situations with the essential items that they need to thrive — at home, at school, and at play. They provide these items by connecting communities that have with communities that need. Roycemore is partnering to host a donation drive for Cradles to Crayons, and are collecting new and gently used clothes, toys, books, and more. These items will then be taken to Cradles to Crayons' "Giving Factory", where volunteers will sort the items into "KidPacks" of personalized, essential items, which they can then distribute to partner organizations. It only takes $33 to create one KidPack — if you would like to further support the mission of Cradles to Crayons, please consider donating at give.nudm.org.

Annual Scholarship Dinner & Auction

“A Night To Remember”
On Saturday, April 28, 2018, Roycemore's long-standing tradition continues with the Annual Dinner and Auction. At the event, current Parents and Grandparents will rub elbows with Alumni and leaders from our community. The night features a silent auction, wine bar, and seated dinner with catering by The Hearty Boys of Food Network fame!

The Scholarship Dinner & Auction committee is seeking donated items to offer at the silent and live auctions. These lively events are fun for guests and they help raise much-needed dollars to replenish the Scholarship fund. We especially need sports tickets (Cubs, Sox, Bulls) and tickets to Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ravinia, or other similar performance events. We are also seeking donations of cooking lessons, spa day packages, jewelry, housewares, toys, and unusual items from near and far.
