Preschool Programs in Roxbury Celebrate Moving Up
Two Roxbury Township Preschool programs recently celebrated with graduations and moving up ceremonies.

On Friday, June 2nd, the Roxbury High School's Four Year Old Preschool program graduated! The theme of Mini Monsters was used as the basis for the ceremony and their program this year. The high school students showcased the preschoolers by performing "skits" related to the theme as well as a PowerPoint presentation of events and activities throughout the year. A video of each child reflecting on the school year was also shown.  Before leaving for the summer, the preschoolers each planted a flower pinwheel in the memorial garden in front of the high school.

The Roxbury Community School Preschool program housed at Kennedy School also celebrated its moving up ceremony on Tuesday, June 13th. This tuition-based preschool program for three to five-year-olds focused on the theme that 'We are Stars!'

This student-led ceremony for family members featured some of the preschoolers favorite songs learned throughout the year followed by an ice cream social!

Roxbury, Randolph Girls Sparkle at Nationals
Competition helped power the Roxbury girls sprint medley on Saturday afternoon. The Gaels - Jess Cammarata and Jordan Morris, senior Alexis Smith, and junior Karly Forker - were seeded into the fastest heat based on a compiled time from each runner's personal best.

They exceeded even their own expectations, finishing ninth in 4:02.81 to surpass the 3-year-old Morris County record. It's been a season of success for Roxbury, which made its first trip to Greensboro, N.C. since the championship 4xMile in 2006 - which still holds the meet record.

"We were excited for the trip to start with," Forker said. "When we got here, and saw how big it was, and how well everyone was doing, we thought wow, we're going to have to run our best to be competitive. ... We'd rather run in the fast heat and come in last, than win a slower heat."

Roxbury Amateur Radio Expert Readies for Weekend of Roughing It
A Roxbury based group of amateur ("ham") radio operators is looking for new members and its founder is inviting the public to participate in this weekend's American Radio Relay League Field Day to get a taste of things at their worst.

At the event, amateur radio operators will stay outdoors and work around the clock to set up field radio communication stations, get on the air and contact thousands of other operators in the United States and Canada, said Kenvil resident Edward Donnelly, president and founder of the West Morris Amateur Radio Club. He said the field day is the group's yearly "shakedown run" for the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and it's designed to simulate working in less-than-ideal conditions.

The field day will take place at the Lakeland Little League field at 20 Sparta Road in Stanhope on June 24 and June 25.

Lake Hopatcong Weed Removal Begins
This summer's Lake Hopatcong weed removal program was scheduled to begin June 19th, with the training of new seasonal employees.

With guidance from Hopatcong State Park personnel, the summer help will begin harvesting weeds in all coves between Hopatcong State Park and the north side of Bertrand's Island, according to a statement from Morris County. The first phase will end July 14 and will include weed removal at Clam Bake Cover, Point Pleasant, King Cove and Ingram's Cove.

Trees on Chopping Block as Progress Finds Roxbury's Oldest Development
Most of the time, Hercules Park in Kenvil is a quiet, shady place. This summer, that will change.

Many of its homes, built by Hercules to house workers, haven't changed much over the years. Saplings -  planted in rows alongside the sidewalks in the early 1900s - now stand tall and have spread their trunks and limbs wide. The sidewalks are broken and many are heaved by the expanding  tree trunks. The narrow roads haven't been repaved in two decades.

The solitude of Hercules Park will be temporarily shattered next month. The township is about to embark on a $440,000 infrastructure improvement project there, an effort that will involve tearing up the pothole-ridden pavement and laying new macadam, installing new curbs and replacing sidewalks on one side of the streets and removing them altogether on the other side.

A Good Time at the Roxbury Beach Blast (and Blast and Blast)
More than a thousand people were inching their way out of Roxbury's Horseshoe Lake Park on Friday night, having witnessed what many described as a fantastic fireworks display that included three finales. Then they got a surprise: Turned out the over-the-top fireworks crew wasn't quite finished.

5th Annual Roxbury Town-wide Garage Sale - June 24-25
The Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to  announce that its 5th Annual Town-wide Garage Sale will take place during the weekend of  Saturday, June 24 and Sunday June 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., each day, throughout the  Township.

In 2016 this fundraiser, for the Chamber of Commerce, featured over 180 individual  garage sales-attracting hundreds of visitors to the Township for a great day of shopping.  The Chamber's goal is to attract as many shoppers and encourage as many garage sales  throughout the Township as possible during the weekend of June 24 and 25.

All garage-sellers are encouraged to register. Once again, there will be no fees (though donations  are welcome), no signs and no printed directories/maps to be handed out. We are simplifying the  event logistics so the Chamber can concentrate on promoting a fun-filled day of bargain hunting.

The Township's Mayor and Council have once again passed a resolution to waive the required  yard-sale permit for the weekend.

Live in a condo, an apartment, away on vacation? No problem, a Community Yard Sale at  Horseshoe Lake is scheduled for Saturday, September 23. Event details will be released in late  July for that event.

Visit our event website, roxburygaragesale.org, for additional information or to register.

Roxbury Applied Music Program
Mid-Year Registration for Grades 5-12

Roxbury's Applied Music Program is one of the most celebrated after school programs in the region. Blessed with award-winning music educators offering world-class instruction, the program nurtures local talent, empowering students to pursue careers in entertainment well after graduation.

This is a district-wide program that provides a high-quality enhancement to classroom instruction. Teachers are all specialists on their instrument or vocal specialty. All of our teachers are trained professional musicians and highly qualified in their instrument of expertise. Private study is extremely valuable to the individual student and highly encouraged. Private study is offered as enrichment, NOT remedial instruction. It is encouraged for the complete development of each students' potential as a performing musician and/or artist.

We are beginning mid-year registrations for those students interested in taking private lesson. Once the form and registration fee are received, your child will be assigned a weekly lesson time.

RHS Financial Literacy this Summer
The New Jersey Department of Education has mandated that all students are required to complete a course (2.5 credits) in Financial Literacy to be eligible for graduation. Due to the number of students requesting to take this course, we have decided to offer the class as an online summer course (we will continue to offer the traditional Financial Literacy course at Roxbury High School as well).

The course will be available to Roxbury High School rising juniors and seniors only during the summer of 2017. The course will begin on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 and run for approximately seven weeks. This interactive course will include writing assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests.

The final exam must be taken in person at Roxbury High School during the week of August 14, 2017. If the student does not fulfill all of the requirements for this class, no credit will be given and the appropriate grade will be listed on the student's transcript.
