President's Message

2018 has pushed us to think and act more strategically and quickly than ever before to hold our leaders in Washington accountable. Prevention and action, driven by education and community, continue to serve at the core of who we are and what we do at the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization.

The Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now (ARBAN) Act continues to gain momentum on the Hill. This month, U.S. House Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) - along with cosponsors Reps. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Betty McCollum (D-MN), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Mark Pocan (D-WI), Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Paul Tonko introduced the House companion bill for the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act (ARBAN). The act would expedite a ban on asbestos imports and uses of the hazardous substance, both current and future. We are eternally grateful for Congressional champions like Senator Merkley and Congresswoman Bonamici for leading the charge to eliminate asbestos.

During the first days of March, our educational and coalition building efforts will continue when we attend and speak at the 22nd Annual PACNY Conference. It was an honor to deliver the keynote address, "Mitigating Asbestos Exposure in the 21st Century," which offered the latest updates in asbestos-related policy, advocacy, and education.

We're also working diligently on our upcoming 14th Annual International Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference, quickly approaching on April 13-15, 2018 in Washington, DC. We've got an impressive lineup of nearly 30 speakers from 9 countries to present you with the latest information on global education, advocacy, and community efforts. Prepare for our can't-miss conference with ADAO's Simple 5-Point Conference Prep Checklist. Know a Mesothelioma Warrior you would like to honor? Consider a 2018 Conference Program Tribute page to honor and celebrate your loved one -- deadline is March 10th.

This month, our Meet the Speaker blog series  continues to introduce you to the powerful voices you'll hear at ADAO's educational conference.

Finally, mark your calendars for April 1-7, as Global Asbestos Awareness Week returns! Once again, ADAO is partnering with McOnie to disseminate lifesaving asbestos prevention information around the world in English, Russian, Hindi, Portuguese, French, and Spanish. We can give it a real boost if we all band together to spread this year's GAAW far and wide!
