The College of Engineering hosted its inaugural industryXchange workshop on Wednesday, May 24, at the Hintz Family Alumni Center. Designed to help build strong connections between the college and industry, the workshop included panel discussions, faculty research presentations, and a graduate student poster session.

$8M to Advance Metamaterials Research from DARPA, Navy, and Lockheed Martin
Doug Werner, John L. and Genevieve H. McCain Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering, has been awarded more than $8 million to continue his pioneering work in metamaterials development. The funding comes from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, The United States Navy, and Lockheed Martin.>>
Richard Yetter a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Richard Yetter, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the High Pressure Combustion Lab, was recently named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
The fellow grade is the highest elected level of membership in ASME. Fellowship is conferred upon a member with at least 10 years of active engineering practice and who has made significant contributions to the profession.

Penn State is a member of a multi-university research team led by researchers from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Tickle College of Engineering that was selected by NASA to explore transformative system-level aviation innovations as part of NASA Aeronautics' University Leadership Initiative. Sven Schmitz, associate professor of aerospace engineering, is leading the research efforts at Penn State.>>
Office of Naval Research Grant to Study Ceramics
Namiko Yamamoto, assistant professor of aerospace engineering, was recently awarded $447,663 through the Office of Naval Research Sea-Based Aviation Airframe Structures and Materials program to study fundamental toughening mechanisms of novel ceramic composites and their use as alternative materials for high-temperature applications in the aerospace industry.>>
Microbial Fuel Cell Converts Methane to Electricity
Transporting methane from gas wellheads to market provides multiple opportunities for this greenhouse gas to leak into the atmosphere. Now, an international team of researchers has taken the first step in converting methane directly to electricity using bacteria, in a way that could be done near the drilling sites. Thomas K. Wood, holder of the biotechnology endowed chair and professor of chemical engineering, is leading the research at Penn State.>>
Wind Energy Club Breezes to Victory in DOE Collegiate Wind Competition
The Penn State team, comprised of 11 students from various engineering majors, beat out nine other teams from across the nation, at the U.S. Department of Energy Collegiate Wind Competition 2017 Technical Challenge.>>
