Formed through a partnership between Marshfield Clinic and several community coalitions in 1995, Northwoods Coalition is the largest and oldest coalition dedicated to substance abuse prevention in Wisconsin. Representatives from coalitions in a 34-county region, including all 11 of Wisconsin Tribal Nations, serve on a non-governing advisory board to help shape policies, practices and programs which address public health issues arising from use of alcohol and other drugs. Since 2007, through a contract with Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Marshfield Clinic has served as a Regional Center for the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth. The purpose of the Alliance for Wisconsin Youth is to enhance and support the capacity of coalitions in substance abuse prevention and youth development.

The Associated Press declared that the word "addict" should no longer be used as a noun. Their 2017 AP Stylebook,
used by journalists, media and academics, suggests using phrases similar to "he was addicted," or "people with heroin addiction."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults are more likely to use prescription opioids than adults aged 20 - 39. In 2015, approximately 12 million Medicare patients were prescribed opioid painkillers. During the same year, 2.7 million Americans, over 50 years old, intentionally misused painkillers.
In a letter, Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked Congress to remove protections that prohibit the Justice Department from using federal funds to prevent certain states from implementing their own laws that "authorize the use, distribution, possession or cultivation of medical marijuana."
Researchers uncovered a key role for intestinal fungi in the liver damage seen in alcoholic liver disease. Preliminary findings suggest that antifungal drugs could potentially be used to treat the disease.
Teen Use of E-cigarettes, Tobacco Products Drops After Regulatory Push
A new report, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Tobacco Products suggests the number of high school and middle school students using electronic cigarettes fell from 3 million in 2015 to 2.2 million last year.

RCOs that are domestic private nonprofit entities in states, territories, or tribes are eligible to apply for the 2017 Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act: Building Communities of Recovery grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). Funds can be used to support the development, enhancement, expansion, and delivery of recovery support services (RSS) as well as promotion of and education about recovery.
