UNJURIED/UNCENSORED:
MAKING AS220

Unjuried/Uncensored: Making AS220, is a feature length documentary about AS220, which was formed in 1985 to provide a venue for Rhode Island artists of all stripes. From its humble beginnings on the third floor of the Ocean State Theater (now Providence Performing Arts Center), through today, AS220 has remained steadfast in its mission to provide an unjuried and uncensored outlet for all. Its current holdings represent an investment of more than 25 million dollars in Downtown Providence, owning three buildings totaling over 100,000 square feet of space, providing low-income housing including 45 artist studios, 6 commercial tenants, serving over 70,000 people per year and is one of the most successful developers in the downtown area. After more than 30 years, the organization has gained global recognition as a model of creative placemaking, a term that describes the integration of artistic and cultural communities to revitalize neighborhoods, towns and cities.

MY LIFE IN HITLER'S GERMANY

Imagine hundreds of voices from pre-war Germany. Voices that said “no”. Voices that have not been heard since the 1930s, voices that have been silent for 80 years. Voices that have finally reach our ears to tell us about Hitler’s Germany, about Nazis taking over German society, about the total transformation of daily life during the Reich. Eyewitness accounts written at that time by those who experienced the rise of Nazism. Imagine 263 stories. 20,000 pages written by men and women in exile, ordinary citizens transformed overnight into social pariahs. A few dozen booklets, most of them 150 to 200 pages, written in German and English. These autobiographies are preserved today in Harvard University’s archives, unknown even by most historians on the era. Almost none of the accounts had been published at the time; about a dozen were published later, mostly posthumously. These manuscripts are of immeasurable value, and are what this film is made of.
