A Word from Andrew
A Call to Forgiveness...

I drove by a Ford dealership today whose electronic sign out front read, "Don't find fault. Find a remedy." Pretty good, don't you think?

Finding fault is easy and passive. Seeking solutions to personal, professional, or political problems is complex and requires compromise and cooperation. And when this is mixed with compassion, it properly leads to action and powerful change.

Forgiveness is like this, too. To be united with self and others is more than a passive position. It calls us to repentance (change and turning around) for the ways we wound our lives, the lives of others, and the life of the world. It often takes courageous action to create harmony and alliance between human beings, nations, and all of creation. In theological terms, repentance must always lead to reconciliation.

Even the marriage between human beings and Mother Earth is another matter of the movement toward oneness. As my friend and colleague David aptly said this week, "We can't just ask for forgiveness from Mother Earth and not change our ways. We must act." Exactly.

In the song "Hard Sun" by Eddie Vedder off of the Into the Wild soundtrack, creation is depicted in the guise of a man and a woman. In one poignant lyric, Vedder sings:

When I walk beside her
I am the better man
when i look to leave her
I always stagger back again

That is to say, when we are living in alignment with the creation God loves, we are the better for it. When we care for creation, we are being good stewards of the environment, as we rely on the goodness of creation to live and move and have our being.

The same goes for our relationships with God and with one another. When we walk beside one another and beside God, we are better people. When we take leave of this oneness and alliance, we become fragmented and fractured in body, mind, and spirit. But it is God's welcome and enduring forgiveness that assure us that we can always stagger back again to where we need to be.

Join us this Sunday as we consider Jesus' call to forgiveness in the famous story of his cleansing of the Temple (John 2:13-22). It is a call to repentance and reconciliation. It is a call to form alliances and do the things that make for peace within us and within our world. It is a call to create systems that honor the prophet Micah's wisdom to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with the God who made us to save and savor the world.

United with you,

Andrew

HEART FOR MISSIONS
America for Christ 2018

The theme for the America for Christ (AFC) Offering 2018 is "Equipping Disciples," informed by this
biblical text: "The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come  to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of  Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-13, NRSV).

American Baptist Home Mission Society (ABHMS) works to broaden our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus in word and deed for
the 21st century, and to nurture discipleship by expanding our network of highly motivated change-agents who share the Good News and impact the world with God's love. In this way, we encourage authentic Christian discipleship in which the fullness of the Gospel-in its personal and social implications  are manifested in individuals living Jesus' message, involved in their communities and carrying out God's call in their lives.

As you contribute to AFC, you enable ABHMS to provide high-quality Christian resources and
encouragement to our network of disciple-makers, thereby improving their effectiveness in equipping
other Christians. Our Equipping Disciples team facilitates virtual communities and networks of American Baptists engaged in discipleship for mutual support and enrichment.

Your Pine Street Church Heart for Missions Team has set a challenge goal of $1,500 for the 2018 America for Christ Special Offering. Thank you for your help in reaching that goal.
