Anything left in lockers after the last day will be donated or thrown out.  Thank you for your help.

Exciting French Opportunities

Bonjour,
I am writing to quickly let you know of two opportunities you should consider taking advantage of this summer and next school year. Both of them would greatly increase your student's interest and aptitude in French studies.

1.  French Summer Course
Grace Caudillo, my IS colleague and native French speaker, will be teaching a summer school course for students to gain confidence in speaking French and master the content they need to be successful in French 1B next year. The course is Aug 7-18.
I highly encourage all current French 1A students to enroll especially those who have struggled with either participation or concept mastery this year. It promises to be a fun course with lots of authentic learning opportunities.
I've attached  the course ad for more information. Don't hesitate to contact me or Grace Caudillo with any questions you may have.

2.  Host an intern second semester
We will be welcoming Ndeye Marème Touré from Senegal as our teaching assistant next year.  She is 24 years old, interested in eventually pursuing a teaching degree in Senegal and excited to share her language and culture with our IS community next year.
We are still looking for a second semester or even a 3rd or 4th quarter host family for her next year.   The requirements are that you have a private bedroom for her and are able to provide meals and a friendly family atmosphere.  Past host families have truly enjoyed sharing cultures and welcoming a new member into their family.
If you are interested in this opportunity please contact me immediately.  I can explain the program in more detail or put you in touch with former host families.  This is one of the awesome programs that make IS exceptional partly because it demonstartets the warmth and generosity of our parent community.

I know this is a busy time of year so thank you for taking the time to read this email and discuss these opportunities with your family.
I look forward to hearing from you,

Traci Sullivan, your child's French 1A teacher
Watering Volunteers Needed!

Are you interested in keeping our campus beautiful during the summer months?  The Campus Improvement Day crew improved our grounds with planting of flowers and shrubs. Unfortunately, they need water and our dry months are coming up.

Can you or your family sign-up for a week to come once or twice to water the plants in the parking entrance and the main entrance to the school? We have watering hoses that are in place. The person responsible would turn on the water and water the areas and then turn off the water.

If you are interested and can find the time, please sign-up below. We are looking to cover the following weeks; 6/26, 73, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/7, 8/14, 8/21, 8/28, 9/4, 9/11, 9/18, 9/24. Times to come are what you can arrange yourself.  Questions, please contact Meribeth, pedersentrio@msn.com

Terrific Titan Tickets

You might have a card show up in your mailbox at home, where a staff member recognized your student for excellence in one of our 6Cs (Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Creativity, Citizenship, Communication, Character).  This is part of a new, whole school program that we have implemented in order to recognize and celebrate your student as they shine in our core competencies.  They look really good on the refrigerator.

Spots Available French Exchange Program

There are still spots available for boys on next year's French exchange.  If you have an 8th
, 9th
or 10th grade student student, consider enrolling them in next year's exchange.  They'll get the amazing opportunity to travel to France for two weeks with their classmates, visit Nantes, Paris, and other destinations, and experience life with a French family.

Contact Tami Wietfeldt,
, for more information.
Back to Business Day: Wed. 8/16

Families are expected to download all the forms and information from our website at www.bsd405.org/international. All documents will be on line by August 1st. There will not be copies of the forms available at school so please print them out in advance and bring the completed copies with you. Included will be a document for you to see what the fees are by grade so you will know what to expect. The lines can be very long but you can beat the lines by paying online at https://touchbase.bsd405.org/. However, if you don't mind the lines, you may pay in the main office or at the attendance window. We now take credit cards, checks and cash! We can only do one transaction per student so you will need at least one check per student to pay for class fees.

At Back to Business day your student will get their schedule, PE lock, be assigned a locker, receive an ORCA card to ride the Metro Bus (if eligible), have their photo taken, and pay fees. The school office will be open starting Monday, August 7 from 9-2. Have a wonderful summer!

201 7   HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT: Sept. 7-8, 2017
The International School offers an annual retreat for our high school students in order to build community and realize its mission of providing students with a globally focused education. The academic content of the retreat follows a four-year cycle of geographic and cultural regions including Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. The retreat's objectives are for students to explore a few forms of  African cultural expression; to understand some of the challenges facing different African societies and the power we and the world community have to address them; and to appreciate the value of the IS community and its contribution to our overall success for the coming school year.
High school students (grades 9-12) will come to school the morning of Thursday, September  7
th  and will be bussed to Camp  Warm Beachnear Stanwood. They will spend the night there and will return by bus the following day, Friday, September 8th by 2:30 pm.
The registration fee is $100 . The fee for the retreat has been added to your student's account online so you may pay online .  Scholarships available! Contact the office.

Retreat Chaperone Volunteers Needed! Join Us!
The trip is only possible with your support! Our greatest need is for cabin chaperones; we need 12 male and 12 female chaperones to stay in cabins with students. We  also need some of those chaperones to ride to camp and back on buses and to chaperone during the Thursday afternoon sessions, evening activities, Friday morning meetings, andmeals. We recognize that some parents can be available overnight but may need to drive separately after work or late in the afternoon.
If you are able to chaperone please let us know the following:
·        If you can ride the bus and stay for the entire retreat or will need to drive separately
·        If you are coming separately, what time will you plan to arrive and to leave Camp Schechter (approximately)
·        Your cell phone
·        Best email address to reach you
Please consider volunteering for this valuable student experience!

Bellevue Schools Foujndation
Dear Middle and High School Principals,

As the end of the school year looms large, Bellevue Schools Foundation urgently needs your help to encourage parent participation to ensure that the programs that benefit your students and the whole district continue with robust support next year, as we face a serious revenue shortfall. Please share our message with your families before the school year ends and help us continue the programs that serve your students.

Thank you.

ARE YOU IN THE 10 PERCENT?
For the first time in decades, the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF) is in danger of cutting funding for programs that directly affect our Bellevue students.

Bellevue's public schools are among the best in the nation because of Foundation donors. The Foundation funds programs that no one local PTSA could fund; innovative programs that elevate the basic education provided by the Bellevue School District - programs like:

· Naviance College & Career Platform
· AP Capstone Diploma Program
· K-12 Computer Science
· K-8 STEM
· Social/Emotional Learning
· Arts, Enrichment & Innovation Grants
· Music grants, and more.

To make sure these critical programs continue, the BSF must raise an additional $500,000 by the end of the summer. If you're among the 10% of dedicated families who have already contributed to Bellevue Schools Foundation, thank you for all you've done this year.

If you're among the 90% who have not, please consider making an annual gift of $250 or more per child HERE. Or join the Foundation's Allin4Kids Monthly Giving Club with a pledge of $20 a month before the school year ends.

Thank you for rallying in support of our 20,000 Bellevue School District children. Together we will ensure our students continue to receive the private-school-caliber quality education they need and deserve.
Host Families Needed for IS Interns 2017-2018

Interested in hosting our wonderful French language intern next year? We are currently looking for 2nd  semester or 3rd  and 4th
quarter host families.

We have hired a young Senegalese woman, Marème Touré, to be our French language intern next year. She is incredibly excited to meet our community and share her language and culture with us. If you are interested in hosting Marème for all or part of second semester next year, please contact Traci Sullivan.

Please contact Traci Sullivan for more information:  sullivant@bsd405.org.

Objective
For students to gain confidence in the French language and present the background knowledge they need to be successful entering French 1b

When entering International School at any grade higher than 6th, students are automatically placed in French 1b (with the 7th grade class) and must do remedial work during the school year to study 1a. This means they are sometimes pulled from classroom activities to fill in knowledge gaps

For who?
This course is for students 7th grade or higher, entering International School with no previous experience with French AND/OR for students of all ages needing a refresher in language basics.

When?
August 7-August 18
8:30 am - 12:30 pm
Note: Friday August 18th we will end at 2:00 because of our field trip to Lynn's Bistro in Kirkland!

Where?
International School
Cost: $225/student
Scholarships available

What will we be doing?
Games! Songs! Conversation partners! Eating pastries! Making crêpes! French sports! Field trip to a French restaurant in Kirkland!

Subjects covered:
Greetings and basics, family, friends, school, activities and likes/dislikes and appropriate grammar

Why should my student take this course?
* When starting the year at IS, it allows students to participate fully in classroom activities with their peers without the language or confidence gap
* It is a great introduction to French culture
* It is more affordable than a year of independent tutoring
Students must attend the whole two weeks to be able to enter at a 1b level
For more information, please contact: Grace Caudillo at caudillog@bsd405.org

Note: this course can only be offered if we have an enrollment of 10 or more
