Mayor Carl Suraci, Liaisons to Parks and Recreation: Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley and Committeeman Doug Tomson presented a proclamation honoring July as Parks and Recreation Month to Director Bob Wagner and Recreation Program Coordinator Brian VanDongen.

llsborough Township has been recognized as a Playful City USA community for the town's efforts in promoting play at parks through recreation programming and facility improvements for the second year in a row.

Hillsborough Township's 2017 Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks Set for Saturday, July 1st
Festivities Start @ 5pm - Auten Rd. Intermediate School;
Shuttle Buses @ Hillsborough High School;
(Rain date is Sunday, July 2nd)
Mayor Carl Suraci recently that the Hillsborough Independence Day Fireworks Celebration will be held on Saturday, July 1st.
This years celebration will feature:

Free inflatable amusements available from 5pm to 8pm: Dunk Pit Basketball, Castle Fun Center, Family Fun Slide, Pirate Island Obstacle Course

The food tent will include local delights for purchase. Refreshments will include pizza, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, kettle corn and more.
The festivities begin at 5 pm at the Auten Road Intermediate School field. Shuttle busses will be available, beginning at 5 pm, from the Hillsborough High School parking lot.
The rain date is Sunday July 2nd.
"We look forward to seeing you all there," concluded Mayor Carl Suraci during the announcement.

Somerset County Department of Human Services hosted its Annual Municipal Alliance Appreciation dinner on June 8th at Raritan Valley Community College. Several members of the Hillsborough Millstone Municipal Alliance attended the dinner to celebrate a great year of prevention efforts.

Hillsborough Township Honored as
2017 Playful City USA Community
Hillsborough Twp. recognized for putting the needs of kids
and families first as part of Playful City USA program
National non-profit KaBOOM! is honoring Hillsborough with a 2017 Playful City USA designation for the second time. Playful City USA honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of families first so kids can learn, grow and develop important life skills. These communities are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents.
The 2017 Playful City USA recognition includes 258 communities from Richmond, Virginia to Richmond, California that make it as easy as possible for kids to play. In total, these communities feature more than 14,000 safe and engaging play spaces that serve more than 4 million kids.
Hillsborough offers 20 parks and recreation facilities full of various amenities. In the past year, a new playground structure was installed at the Municipal Playground and a new bowl feature was added at the skate park at Ann Van Middlesworth Park. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers year-round sports and recreational programming for children of all ages and abilities.

Hillsborough Participates in 2017 Special Olympics Torch Run - Flame of Hope
Members of Hillsborough Township Police Department participated in the 34th Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run on Friday, June 8th. The Hillsborough segment began at Dukes Parkway East with the hand-off from Somerville Police Department and made its way down Route 206 to ShopRite. Runners participated in
26 separate legs throughout the day starting at 4:45 a.m.
The run ended on Friday night at the Special Olympics New Jersey summer games opening ceremony at The College of New Jersey.

Registration Now Open for Recreation Programs
Summer Camp Registration
Summer Recreation Camp registrations are currently being accepted. Camps for 5 to 11-year-olds are held at Auten Road and Amsterdam Schools. Camp for 12 to 14-year-olds will be held at Hillsborough Middle School. Tiny Camp for 4 and 5-year-olds will be at Hillsborough Elementary School. Camps begin on Monday, June 26th and run for 8 weeks through August 18th. Information and registration are available on the Parks & Recreation website.

Coupons for access to drop off at the Auten Road Facility are available at the Hillsborough Township Department of Public Works (DPW) office, located at 21 East Mountain Road, Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm.

Parents who host teenage drinking parties or allow underage adults to drink in their home need to know the consequences of the law.
- Fact #1 - It is illegal in NJ to serve alcohol to anyone who is under the legal drinking age of 21 (NJSA 2C:33-17a).
- Fact #2 - It is illegal in NJ to make your home or property available for the purpose of allowing anyone who is under the legal drinking age of 21 a place to consume alcohol (NJSA 2C:33-17b).
- Fact #3 - Any person who serves or makes alcohol available to a person under the legal drinking age of 21 is subject to a $1,000 fine and up to 180 days in jail per person served. Parents can be held civilly liable even if they are not present during the time of the party (NJSA 2C:33-17).
- Fact #4 - If serving an underage person alcohol results in injury, the adult may be charged with Endangering the Welfare of Children, and may be subject to a fine of up to $15,000 and up to 5 years in state prison (NJSA 2C:24-4).
- Fact #5 - New Jersey Law imposes civil liability on social hosts who serve alcohol to anyone under the legal drinking age of 21 who is subsequently involved in an incident causing injury or death.
- Fact #6 - A social host may be sued for up to two years after an incident that occurs resulting in injury or death. As the result of a lawsuit, your house, car, and bank accounts may be seized and future wages may be garnished.

Swimming Pool and Permit Requirements
Generally speaking, pools, spas and hot tubs are categorized into three groups: in-ground; above/on-ground permanent; and above/on-ground temporary (seasonal), which include those that are portable or inflatable.
Are permits required for all pools, spas and hot tubs? Maybe!
Here is a hint.....the STATE OF NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AFFAIRS, as a safety measure, requires that any pool, spa or hot tub, as defined by the International Residential Code (IRC) 2009, New Jersey Edition, as any structure intended for swimming or recreational bathing that can hold more than twenty-four (24) inches in depth of water, requires the proper Construction permits. In addition, ALL appropriate requirements of the Municipal Zoning & Engineering Codes must be met. So before you take the "plunge" and purchase a pool, spa or hot tub keep in mind that a Construction permit along with other Municipal approvals may be necessary. You, your family and the public's safety is everyone's primary concern!

Duke Farms Farm Market Now Open

The Farm to Table Market at Duke Farms is now open for the season. The Market features several vendors offering a variety of local produce, meats, cheeses, crafts and wine.

News From Somerset County

Farmers Market Vouchers for Eligible Seniors
Starting Monday, July 3, eligible seniors can obtain $25 worth of vouchers to buy New Jersey fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables and herbs. These free vouchers can be used at participating farmer's markets in Somerset County until Nov. 30.
People interested in applying can stop by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services in the Human Services Building, located at 27 Warren St., between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Vouchers will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last.
Eligible individuals must be age 60 or above and reside in Somerset County. Income guidelines require that an individual's income not exceed $22,311 and a married couple's income not exceed $30,044.
All applicants must show proof of age and residency, such as a driver's license or other documentation, and proof of income, such as a current income tax return or social security statement. Office on Aging & Disability Services staff will be available to assist individuals when they are applying for their vouchers.
