Join Us to Lobby for Automatic Voter Registration
June 28 at Massachusetts State House

AVR shifts voter registration from an opt-in to an opt-out system. If passed, every eligible citizen who goes to the RMV or other state services agencies would automatically be registered to vote, unless they decline. This will minimize paper forms and data-entry errors and maximize accuracy and security. Most importantly,
it will
add up to 700,00 new voters to the rolls!

WHERE: Room 428, State House, Boston, MA
Register for AVR Lobby Day
and we will arrange meetings with your legislators. You'll receive training and talking points and then you can urge your legislators to vote for this important reform.

June 21 Award Ceremony Honors Winners of
"Making Democracy Work" Student Video Contest

With friends, family, teachers, and legislators on hand, eight Massachusetts high school students received awards from LWVMA for their winning entries in our "Making Democracy Work In My Community" video contest on
June 21.
The
winning videos illustrate the powerful and diverse ways people across Massachusetts are making democracy work:
by fighting injustice, organizing action, fostering dialogue, encouraging civic participation, or educating about important issues.
The first place winning video was from Quincy High School; second place was from Newton South High School; and third place was from Millis High School. The honorable mention winners were from Wellesley High School and Marblehead High School.
The award ceremony at the State House featured inspiring reflections on civic engagement by State Senator John Keenan and State Representative Cory Atkins. Several other state legislators--Representative Ruth Balser, Representative Tackey Chan, Representative Lori Ehrlich, Representative David Linsky, Representative Alice Peisch, Senator Cynthia Stone Creem, Senator Thomas McGee, and Senator Richard Ross--awarded citations to students from their districts.

The joint committees of the Massachusetts legislature have been holding hearings on bills at a rapid pace these last six weeks, and the League's legislative specialists have been testifying at hearings every week.
We've made the case for automatic voter registration, increased civics education, criminal justice reforms, immigration reform and safe communities, carbon pricing, affordable housing, an improved health care system, and even bicycle safety rules.
