Monthly news & updates from the Community Development Partnership
June 2017

A Note from Jay
Community Housing Partnership
There's an affordable housing crisis on the Cape. Seasonal and vacation dynamics drive the housing market beyond the reach of many who live and work locally year round. It's a community problem and we need a community solution.

Working in partnership with Housing Assistance Corporation, we're pleased to announce the launch of the Cape Community Housing Partnership. It's a comprehensive community-based strategy to build public support for affordable housing. We will equip low- to moderate-income residents, business & community leaders and local elected & appointed officials with the knowledge and skills to support the creation of more affordable housing on Lower Cape Cod.

The three-part strategy includes:

*    Cape Housing Institute - A six session series of workshops designed to give municipal leaders and town staff the support, training and technical help they need to make better decisions about land use policy and housing development.

*    Advocacy Training - A training program for community members to empower advocates for affordable housing. Participants will receive training in leadership, organizing and public speaking.

*    Public Education - An education and media campaign, to inform the public about the need for more affordable housing options and build broader community support.

We'll be sharing more in the coming months. In the meantime, you can sign up to receive updates by clicking on this link - www.capehousinginstitute.org.

Safe, Stable, & Affordable Housing
Farewell to Abigail

We bid a fond farewell this month to Abigail Chapman, our Director of Housing & Energy Efficiency Programs. Abigail was an integral part of the CDP's success over the past seven years. She was the lead in developing Thankful Chases Pathways, our award winning, LEED Platinum affordable housing development in West Harwich.

The Real Return also happened under Abigail's leadership. Through this innovative initiative over 200 solar panels were installed on five of our affordable housing buildings. The income generated from the panels was used to finance energy efficiency upgrades and other critical repairs to 40 of our affordable rentals. For the past 3 years, Abigail has directed our Housing Rehabilitation program, helping over 100 families rehabilitate their homes with no-payment, no-interest forgivable loans. And, she is responsible for most of the photography we are able to share in our e-newsletters, on our website, in publications and via social media.

We wish her much success in her new position at Cape Associates.
Strong Local Businesses
Welcome Ann

We're pleased to welcome Ann Robinson to our tea m as the Director of Economic Development. Ann is responsible for leadi ng the efforts of the CDP's Business & Credit programs. She brings with her a grea t depth of experience, and new ideas. Prior to joining the CDP, she served for 22 years as the Executive Director for Community Capital Fund, a co mmunity development financial institution located in Bridgeport, CT. During her time with Community Capital Fund, Ann led the organization's work to provide loans to support affordable housing development, as well as the expan sion of small businesses.

When asked what she was looking forward to in her new role, Ann said, "I have worked with different types of small businesses for many years but never fishermen. I'm excited to learn about a whole new industry. I'm looking forward to finding new ways to support this vital part of our local economy."

You can read more about Ann here.

Preserving homes through rehabilitation

$512,118 - that is the amount that was spent on energy efficiency upgrades through our Housing Rehabilitation program in 2016.

The goal of the program is to preserve existing affordable homes and rentals for year round living. The energy efficiency work is a significant component for two reasons. The first, we're able to increase the affordability of homes for low and moderate income individuals through energy savings. At the same time, the energy being conserved is helping to protect our natural environment.
