General Assembly - Multi Gen Service

This weekend, UU's will gather in New Orleans for General Assembly, the annual meeting of the faith. We will put our attention on them from Phoenix by watching video of the sermon given there just hours before, sharing the results of the previous night's UUA presidential election, and enjoying the music of New Orleans.
This is a multi generational service and there will not be any regular summer RE classes. |

| The Book Group engages in informal discussions of a variety of books. We typically discuss recent nonfiction books on topics such as science, religion, sociology, history, current events, environmental issues and justice, but we don't exclude fiction. Books we read are proposed by the members and voted on by the group. We typically spend 4 to 8 weeks on a book, discussing portions as we read. Save Our Schools Information Session

| Melinda Merkel Iyer and others from Save our Schools will offer a presentation on the movement to oppose the new school voucher program passed by the AZ legislature. Learn more about the issue, help gather petition signatures, and donate to support this grass-roots cause. The presentation will begin after the Sunday service at 11:45 AM in the sanctuary on June 25. Contact Melinda below with any questions. |

| On Sunday, July 2 Rev. Susan will be back from GA in New Orleans, and the UUA Presidential Election. This will most likely be her last Sunday with us before she moves to Boston to assume her presidential role... or it will be her last Sunday before she goes on vacation and returns in August. Either way, there will be much to celebrate and much to mourn, both! Join us for a "Wahoo! BooHoo!" Party in her honor, Sunday July 2, after service. If you are interested in volunteering for the Party Planning committee and can lend a hand with food, decorations, set-up and/or clean-up, etc., contact Janine Gelsinger below. |

On Friday, June 23 at 5:30 PM
will host a live screening of the last candidate forum before the UUA Presidential election on June 24. The UUA General Assembly will elect a new UUA president on June 24. Three candidates are running for one six-year term: the Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray (susanfrederickgray.com), the Rev. Alison Miller (alisonforuuapresident.org), and the Rev. Jeanne Pupke (jeannepupke.com).

On Saturday, June 24 at 6:30 PM
we will livestream the General Assembly Ware Lecturer, Bryan Stevenson. Bryan Stevenson is the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama. Mr. Stevenson is a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer who has dedicated his career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned. Under his leadership, EJI has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill and aiding children prosecuted as adults.

Board of Trustees Meeting

| Break bread and socialize with us starting at 6:00 PM, and the meeting begins at 6:30 PM. Guests are invited to address the board during the guest comments at the beginning and observe the remainder of the meeting. At this meeting the board will welcome its new members and (depending on the UUA election) our interim minister Margret O'Neall. Sangha Buddhist Group

Kids Kamp CIT Community Service Project

The CITs are busy preparing for a second (and last) community service project for the summer of 2017! Our CITs have chosen to organize a donation collection for the Homeward Bound organization based in Phoenix. Homeward Bound is a nonprofit organization in Arizona that serves the needs of families going through homelessness. They help homeless families by providing them housing and a program of services to help them get back on their own feet.
We are kindly asking kids, campers, and parents to donate items for this organization! Some of the items we are collecting include School supplies , Cleaning supplies, Toiletries, Bedding (blankets, pillows, bed sheets), Small furniture (end table, coffee table), Books and children board games,Kitchen supplies (pots, pans, utensils),Shower curtains,House Décor (small paintings, decorations),Tool kits, and Baby supplies. We will be collecting items everyday (all day) at Kamp until Tuesday, June 29. You can place items in container bins located by the parent drop-off (entrance gate) or in the CIT room (Annex C).

Art Journaling Workshop
Saturday, July 1, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Johnson Room

Join Heidi Parmenter in exploring the worship theme "Letting Go & Possibility" through mixed media art journaling. No experience required, only an open mind and a desire to express oneself through visual art. Heidi will teach several different mixed media techniques using paint, spray ink, and texture paste, napkins, tissue paper, etc for those that are interested. We will start the workshop with introductions, chalice lighting & reading and then jump right into creative visual expression of the theme. We will finish up with a "show & tell" for those that want to share their work. Required supplies: your own mixed media art journal in any size (make sure that the paper is thick!), acrylic paint brushes, acrylic paint, white gesso, craft glue (Mod Podge Matte is great!), scissors, old credit card or gift card, and a small spray bottle of water. See the Amazon shopping list below as a guide. If obtaining required supplies is a problem please speak with Heidi. Optional supplies: watercolors, markers, crayons, stencils, stickers, decorative paper napkins, tissue paper, magazine or book cutouts. Provided supplies: baby wipes, wax paper, paper towels, stencils, stamps, ink pads, mark-making tools, misc ephemera, magazines, etc. This workshop is open to anyone 12 and older (parents may need to be present for those 12 - 14, please contact Heidi for more details). No RSVP and this workshop is FREE.

Summer Picnic Potluck Party

July 6: "Family Potluck with Katie and the Children's Ministry" Come one and all for an all-ages potluck. Let out your inner child and explore arts and crafts, games, and lots of fun! Please bring a dinner dish to share.
All Summer Potluck Picnic Parties are held on Thursday evenings at 6:00 PM in the Johnson Room and patio. No childcare is provided for these family-friendly events, so kids and adults can socialize together. In keeping with our green picnic theme, please consider bringing your own utensils and plates, and be prepared to wash your own dishes. See you there!

Write Letters to Immigrants in Detention

Susan Morris will host a letter writing party to send letters to immigrants in the Eloy and Florence detention centers. Representatives from Puente will bring a list of names and sample letters. Writing letters is easy, and can make a huge impact on someone's morale while in detention. Join us from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM, Saturday, June 24. RSVP to Susan Morris for directions to her house below.

Camp is joy! We hike, we swim, we laugh, we sing. We create, we shoot arrows (safely, at targets!), we eat good food, and breathe fresh air. By making new friends and trying new things we build an amazing community of love and acceptance. Our theme, "It's in Every One of Us," connects the splendor of nature around us with the same awesomeness inside us all.
Come join UU youth from all over the district at camp this summer in the cool mountains of Southern California near Big Bear. Campers are well cared-for by trained counselors who are guided by Unitarian Universalist principles and work to build a loving and inclusive camp community. This week is for campers completing grades 2-5. |
