US Department of Education Announcement!
Wayne Maberry, Chair of the ACPE Accreditation Commission, Marc Medwed, ACPE Director of Programs, and I traveled to Washington DC last week to meet with the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI), the review board of the Department of Education concerning our 5-year review. Wayne and Marc put together our materials such that there were no questions or comments for review, a remarkable feat! We are now awaiting final confirmation from the Department of Education that we are recognized through June 2022. We will let you know as soon as we receive official notification. Please join me in congratulating Wayne, Marc, and the Accreditation Commission!

Communities of Practice Clarifications
Thank you to the twelve groups who have now submitted applications to become communities of practice. Two quick clarification points:

|
1. If your group is "morphing" from a regionally funded group that has been funded in the past to a community of practice, your funding for 2017 is already approved and included in your regional budget.
2. If your group is new and seeking new funding, that funding will not be available until Jan. 1, 2018 from the national budget, though your regional budget may be able to support something in the 2017 fiscal year.

| Please let me know if you have questions or need more information. We hope the Professional Well-Being Committee will be appointed and engaged by August 1 to begin addressing applications/registrations and funding requests. |
Reflections from the Association of Professional Chaplains Conference
Sunday morning, the leadership of our strategic partners on spiritual care (aka cognate groups APC, NAJC, NACC and CASC) gathered to discuss several items, including the 2017 Joint Leadership Symposium, the development of a three year strategic plan to engage the Strategic Partners' boards and members, a joint marketing plan to advance the larger profession, and our ongoing work with the Joint Commission. It is truly a delight to work with such dedicated, talented and hope-filled colleagues. As these projects develop, we will keep you posted.

How do we talk about ourselves?
We've received comments about our name and how to use the full name verses the acronym, specifically in regards to standard 306. Publicly and in all marketing material, we only refer to our association as "ACPE" or "ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care & Education." Legal documents and manuals reviewed by the DOE must reference our full legal name the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.

A Poem for Reflection
The images in this poem seem so familiar for those of us who have spent so many hours in hospital waiting rooms. I offer it as a celebration of life shared and well-lived:

"In The End We Are All Light" by Liz Rosenberg
I love how old men carry purses for their wives,
those stiff light beige or navy wedge-shaped bags
that match the women's pumps,
with small gold clasps that click open and shut.
The men drowse off in medical center waiting rooms,
with bags perched in their laps like big tame birds
too worn to flap away. Within, the wives slowly undress,
put on the thin white robes, consult, come out
and wake the husbands dreaming openmouthed.
And when they both rise up
to take their constitutional,
walk up and down the block, her arms are free as air,
his right hand dangles down.
So I, desiring to shed this skin
for some light silken one,
will tell my husband, "Here, hold this,"
and watch him amble off into the mall among the shining
cans of motor oil, my leather bag
slung over his massive shoulder bone,
so prettily slender-waisted, so forgiving of the ways
we hold each other down, that watching him
I see how men love women, and women men,
and how the burden of the other comes to be
light as a feather blown, more quickly vanishing.

Celebrates the two apostles who preached the Christian gospel in Rome. In Eastern churches this festival begins at sundown.
