In the process of designing a physical place we can exchange a lot of words with a lot of people, but everyone
really wants to know just one thing: what is it going to look like?
In other words, how will needs, ideas and aspirations come together as physical shape and experience?
At Landform we're using 3D modeling to answer that question early and often. The goal is always the same: to visualize design, build consensus and get your project approved. But the approach we use has varied from project to project, based on the unique needs of each. We've used models from early stages of site investigation, through design iteration, to detailing out final concepts.
We recently invested in the technology to process large complex sites with a level of detail that continues to surprise us! Our chosen software - SketchUp - is an ever-capable and affordable program. It maintains the ability to create quick and simple models and has added features that accommodate more complex geometry such as detailed topography.
We know the value of 3D and we're all in!
We have used models to:
- Quickly conceptualize initial site assumptions and design ideas.
- Incorporate detailed site topography and mimic real life conditions, as accurately as possible, in order to understand how site modifications or new development will affect neighbors and views.
- Visualize place and design typologies to understand how they knit together large sites.
- Provide a sense of what it might be like to inhabit a new space.
- Test what is required for site screening, quickly relay cost estimates to clients, and show stakeholders what they can expect on day one and after so many years of landscape growth.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of signage
