 Reframing Aging: Ashby Village Open House & Photo Exhibition!

We all know that Ashby Village members are a remarkable group of people. In the photo exhibition "Reframing Aging", photographer Nancy Rubin and writer Cynthia Overbeck Bix wanted to show the world at large just how remarkable they are, and how members are shattering old images and stereotypes about what it means to be "old."

Festival Italiano: A Celebration of Ashby Village Volunteers
It is often said that the lifeblood of Ashby Village's culture of giving is its 320 volunteers, many of whom are also members. On June 3, the Ashby Village community celebrated volunteers at Festival Italiano. The office courtyard was transitioned into an Italian piazza decorated with Italian colors and featured an espresso bar and specialty cocktails of prosecco and elderflower syrup...

Carolyn thanks the Hearts N' Hands Team
Dear Ashby Village:
On May 25th my world was brightened when three members of the Hearts N' Hands came to wash my windows. An accumulation of years of grime and cobwebs was removed by much scrubbing and rinsing. Luck was with me also in having my son from Atlanta, Georgia arrive to take off and replace screens and curtains... There were many smiles and good conversation around the table afterwards. Thank you Ashby Village, and thanks to each of the Hearts N' Hands.

"I'm very glad to be here. I look forward to this nice affair."
Ashby Village's third 90+ Tea Party was an elegant affair, held on May 27 to honor of the village's 31 members in their 90s. The Julia Morgan Hall at Ashby Village's new headquarters was abuzz with conversation as members were welcomed with hugs and seated at an L-shaped table that was set with china and adorned with flowers.

The Ashby Village
Arts & Culture Series provides a unique dimension to Village life by recognizing and sharing the extraordinary talents of our members.
In the latest event, on June 11 at the Berkeley City Club, Maxine Hong Kingston, Earll Kingston & Judith Foosaner (internationally acclaimed artists, Village members, and long-time friends) shared insights drawn from the intersections of creativity and relationship.

Staying Smarter
Ashby Village Trains iPhone and iPad Users
Smartphones and tablet computers make our lives easier --- and more fun! A recent study from the Pew Research Center found that the fastest growing sector of smartphone users is people 65 and older.
The Ashby Village Technology Team wants to help members bridge the digital divide. Their mission is to provide support that "opens up new possibilities for communication, entertainment, and creativity."
On June 7, 2017, the
Technology Team offered an iPhone and iPad workshop, lead by
Sharon Beck, a retiree who, at 66, started a new career in technology support and training at Apple.

We will have introductory discussions on climate change and and aging/dying.

Choosing Inquiry Over Expectations
An Ashby Village one-year membership was the holiday gift that Roger Pritchard pitched in December 2016 to his three children. They came through! What were his expectations? "I was curious. Clearly, a movement is going on. Ashby Village is an interesting organization; but beyond that, I had no specific expectations. I don't find expectations very helpful. I am more into inquiry, curiosity, discovery."

Outlandish Neighborhood Group
Outlandish is to be with friends, to share experiences and interests, to connect. We came up with our name in a brainstorm, seeking something catchier than "South of Campus." Most of us live in Rockridge or in the Elmwood-Ashby area, and we are lucky to have so many convivial, energetic, and engaged members close by. At our monthly potlucks we schmooze and enjoy each other's company, or... we might see a slide show of the fantastic birds of Colombia, watch a Warriors game, hatch a Science and Ideas forum. For many of us these social connections have led to strong friendships and a network of support. We have grown a true neighborhood. Outlandish is what it means to be part of Ashby Village - to participate, to welcome new members, to count on one another.

On July 1 the City of Berkeley is changing over to a new emergency alert system, ACAlert. The BENS system is being phased out. ACAlert provides lifesaving emergency information about earthquakes, wildfires, and other disasters. ACAlert sends emergency information directly to the device that will work best for you in the format that is best for you, including emails, text messages, TTY/TDD messages, and voice calls.

Craig died after celebrating his 88th birthday and his 65th wedding anniversary. H
is wife Anne expressed deep gratitude for the walks that he shared with
Ashby Village volunteers. "They were very kind and patient with him," she said "listening to his stories and giving him a feeling of community and connection.
