Won't YOU come GrOw with Us!

Please join us for an open house bridal shower honoring former Chapel Choir member Marjorie Hurder on Sunday, June 25, 2 to 4 p.m., in the church parlor. Marjorie is the daughter of Joan and Stan Hurder. She grew up in this church, was known in youth activities for her wonderful sense of humor, graduated in May from the Candler School of Theology, is a new Methodist minister in Maryland, and is getting married later this year in Maryland to another minister (Patrick Buhrman). While she is Baton Rouge this month, we wanted to support and encourage her ministry and approaching marriage.  (For registry information, email [email protected].)

Pastor's Pen

There is an old saying my mother often said to me, "You only know someone when you have to walk a mile in their shoes." Many people we know look like they are doing fine. Scratch beneath the surface, though, and you'll see things are not always what they seem: substance abuse of a spouse, loveless marriages, financial woes, the loss of a job, a parent in a medical crisis, a wayward or difficult child, even an unfulfilled sense of longing. These individuals walk beside us, attend church with us, shop at the same stores and yet we will never know the personal pain they carry every day...unless we take the time to listen.

We live in a time where communication is immediate and constant yet we are further away from understanding the human being standing right next to us. Our smart phones have consumed us to the point of forgetting to see, hear and talk to the person right next to us. Taking the time to listen to one another is one challenge we can all fulfill. All it requires is an open heart ready to share the journey and to offer the assurance of a loving God who walks with them.

Too often we neglect to realize the presence of the living God and God's ability to heal, to work powerfully in a person to bring them to new understandings, new wisdom, a sense of hope. Many of the people who carry heavy emotional loads only need to know that God loves them; that God will sustain them; and that God wants them to enjoy a fruitful life. We forget God's promise of sharing the burden with us. Christ said, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matt. 11:18).

The well from which we minister to others is the same well of living water to which we point others in their distress. When we listen with compassion we are merely walking with our friend, our loved along side them to the well of living water and restoring our souls together.

Who might you walk along side this week?

In Christ,
Dr. Jane

THE CHURCH DIRECTORIES ARE HERE!

It's been a long process, but the directories are finally here! If you or your family had your picture taken to be included in the directory, please stop by the Fellowship Hall before Worship this Sunday to pick up your complementary directory. Additionally, if you haven't picked up your free 8 x 10 Print from Lifetouch we will have those available for pick up on Sunday as well.

If you weren't able to make it to have your picture taken for the directory last fall, but would still like a printed directory, they will cost $5.00 cash or check. Please bring exact change with you on Sunday.

If you have any questions, please contact Kelly at [email protected].

Thank you for everyone who helped with this project and those who came out to have their portraits taken!

VOLUNTEER CHOIR NEEDED FOR JULY - STARTING JULY 9th!

Our dedicated members of Chancel Choir, Chapel Choir, Children's Choirs and Agape Ringers (all of our choirs) have now taken a well-deserved hiatus for the months of June and July. However, that does not mean "the fun will stop!"  During the month of June and the first Sunday of July; we will enjoy special musical offerings provided by soloists but beginning JULY 9TH we invite you to join other singers and raise your voice in creating a VOLUNTEER CHOIR for the Sunday morning worship services!   That's right .... Now is your chance to "make a joyful noise" together with other enthusiastic singers by joining me (Lori) in the Chapel at 10:00 a.m. to:  1) learn the music and 2)sing for the church service at 10:30.   Please bring your families - everyone is welcome (including children)!

The Psalms speak to us about singing, about instruments, about opening our mouths in praise of God, tells us to clap our hands, and shout to God with loud songs of joy. From one of my favorite books, Please don't ask me to sing in the choir by Thomas L. Are, published in 1985 (Hope Publishing), I share this story.........

"I'm thinking about joining the choir at church."
"Oh . . . I don't know if that's a good idea.  It would tie us down on the weekends," my wife, Ellen, said.
"Yeah, I know.  I've thought about that and I've thought of other things, too.   Going to rehearsals when tired, being away from home another night each week, not sitting with you and the kids in church.   But it's something I think I would like to do," I said, talking more to myself than to her.
"You're serious, aren't you?  I didn't know you had such a good voice," she sounded more surprised than opposed to the idea.
The next Thursday, I felt a little surprised myself walking into choir rehearsal.  I could think of a hundred reasons to be somewhere else but over against all the reasonable objections, something inside me wanted to give it a try.
I learned something about myself.  I usually wind up doing things I want to do.  I do my work and volunteer my services because of an inner desire.
My wants may be the lesser of two evils.  I may not desire to get up each morning but I choose to be a responsible person so I do.  I will make sacrifices to sing in the choir and my family will too, but only because I want to do it.
I think God leads me in this way.   Every time I have been called to service Him, He has accompanied the opportunity with a desire to do it.
Maybe this is one way the Holy Spirit works in us.   At least for me, when it feels right and it seems good with God, I believe He has His hand in it.   I will take seriously my choir commitment, making my vow not only to the church, but also to God Himself.
The Psalmist said, "So will I ever sing praises to thy name, as I pay my vows day after day."  I'll do that too, because I want to.

Please mark your calendars so that you may join in the fun - 10:00 a.m., July 9th.   Volunteer choir will be singing for services on July 9, 16, 23 and 30.  We will look forward to seeing you there!

VBS 2017 RECAP!

What an Awesome week we had at Hero Central, our VBS headquarters! We had 76 children join us and, together, we worked to discover our strength in God. We learned that all we need to be real Heroes is a Heart for God, Courage to face our fears, Wisdom through God's Word, Hope through Jesus Christ and the Power of the Holy Spirit. Visit our Facebook page or website to see the fun through photos!

We want to thank all of our volunteers -- 50 Superheroes in all.  Thanks to everyone who helped make decorations, set-up hot and steamy buildings, shop and sort supplies, and figure out our sound system. And, A very special Thank You to our SUPERHERO Center and Group Leaders, who demonstrated over and over how to be Heroes for God! Thank you all for serving and sharing in this adventure!

Speaking of sharing, our Heroes collected enough money to provide 34 pairs of Shoes-that-grow to children who live in extreme poverty. Dr. Jane and the VBS kids challenged YOU to double our gift! With the donations collected this last Sunday during worship we have enough money to purchase 66 pairs of shoes! We are so close to our goal of 68! Each pair of these shoes cost just $15 per pair, last up to 5 years, and can "grow" 5 sizes! For more info, check out their website:  www.shoesthatgrow.com. If you would like to donate towards the last two pairs of shoes for us to hit our goal, please contact the church office and talk to Ruthie or drop your donation in the offering plate during worship with "VBS Shoes" written in the memo section of your check. THANK YOU!

Cleaning UP and Clearing OUT!

Over the next two weeks much work will be done on the second floor of Trice and the second floor of the Children's Building. Both areas are being prepared for a change in licensing that will utilize both spaces when the children return in early August. During the next few weeks, we will be cleaning up cupboards, gathering up teaching materials from cabinets, getting rid of older televisions that we no longer need, replacing chairs and tables in classrooms. This sounds like a lot of changes and it is but everything is all for the better!  Our UMPEA and After-School will be expanding their outreach to more children and more classrooms are needed to accomplish this. If you or your class use any of the spaces in the upstairs Trice or Children's areas, please check in with Toi Davis, Director of the Preschool and After-school programs about the things you would like kept.  Thank you!

A Women's Retreat in Northern Ireland

"To journey without being changed is to be a nomad. To change without journeying is to be a chameleon. To journey and be transformed by the journey is to be a pilgrim." ~Mark Nepo

It's time to begin reserving housing for the retreat in Drumalis, Northern Ireland, October 27,28, and 29th.  We will have an informational gathering July 16th directly after worship in the parlor.  You can ask questions, view photographs from other retreats and sights in Dublin and Belfast, and see who else might be interested in going if you want to travel with others. I have also prepared some ideas for a ten day trip if that helps you imagine what you might do.You may find this information at this link on our website at http://www.universitymethodist.org/ireland2017

For questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]. We will have to have firm reservations by the end of July.

SUMMER SCREENINGS:
A Theological Glimpse at Film

Please join University UMC at the Wesley Foundation on Thursday, June 22nd at 7:00pm for a screening and discussion of Selma. We will begin with a potluck, watch the movie, and then have a discussion led by Revs. Bookter and Darragh. All ages are welcome!

Bring a potluck dish to share. Adam and Colleen will provide a main dish. This film is rated PG-13, so parental discretion is advised (for more information, see: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1020072/parentalguide)

Selma is an Oscar-awarding-winning film that chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting right in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in the President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Join us for this true story of the struggle for justice.

THOUGHTS ON SAFETY

Recently staff was surprised by intruders in the building after the building was locked. This is just a quick reminder to be aware and if you are the last to leave, please have someone stay with you and check the building before turning lights out and locking the doors. Don Oakley and his cleaning crew are often here in the evenings, Monday through Friday but need to know if you'd like them to lock up for you. (They usually wear purple UUMC T-shirts.) We want everyone to be safe. Thank you!

July Book Club Meeting

Volunteers Needed!

Hope Ministries is in need of volunteers to unload boxes from the Food Bank and to then stock shelves each Thursday from 9 until about noon. This task involves the lifting of boxes of canned foods. Please consider if there is one Thursday each month on which you could provide this assistance. Or perhaps you are available some Thursdays this summer and could fill in until they recruit additional volunteers. Youth (ages 12 to 18) are allowed to volunteer if supervised by an adult. To volunteer, contact Cristy Davidson at Hope Ministries, 355-0702 or [email protected].

Coming This FALL - Promotion Sunday is August 13th

Promotion Sunday will be filled with excitement as we Bless our Backpacks, Present Bibles and Celebrate Teacher "Signing Day." We're also very excited to Kick-off a new Sun day Morning Schedule for Kids! We have been trying to find a way for our children (especially school-age) to remain in Worship on a regular basis, yet still maintain our awesome Children's Choir Program. The ultimate goal of all our programming is to Make Disciples. We feel participating in Worship is a very important -- and essential -- part of faith development.

We've come up with a plan that, with the parents' help, we think will work. Beginning August 13, here's how our mornings will go:
8:30-9:30 AM - Worship
9:35-10:10 AM - Children's Choir
10:10-10:55 AM - Children's Sunday School
11:00 AM -12:00 PM - Worship

Of course, we'll still have Nursery Staff available to escort the younger children (5 and under) to the Nursery after the Children's Moment, if the parent chooses.

Train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6
