Weekend Farewell to IHM Sisters
|
The school and parish communities recently celebrated 114 years of faith-filled service provided by the IHM Sisters during a festive and memorable weekend in early June. The weekend kicked off with the 6th annual IHM Nun Run held on the grounds of Camilla Hall, the home and healthcare center for retired and infirmed Sisters. Eighty-eight members of Team PJP II wore "Spread the Love Everywhere you Go" themed t-shirts in honor of the Sisters. Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts raised an additional $500 for Camilla Hall. Thanks to all who participated or purchased t-shirts to support this annual event.
Later that night school families gathered at the "Spread the Love" Family Festival hosted by the Home & School Association. The night included a Home Run Derby sponsored by the CYO, live music performed by members of the the Bishop Shanahan Jazz Band and PJP II alumni, several food trucks, a dunk tank and a spectacular fireworks finale. An enjoyable time was had by all!
On Sunday friends and families from the community gathered at Our Lady of the Rosary parish for a
Farewell Mass and reception honoring the IHM Sisters, both past and present, who have served our schools. The
Most Reverend Michael J. Fitzgerald presided over the mass which was led in song by PJPII's talented Choir and parish cantor Eileen Weaver.
Our deepest gratitude to all the IHM Sisters who served our school community over the past 114 years and best wishes to Sr. Anne, Sr. Beverly, Sr. Marianne and Sr. Mary Jane as they embark on their new assignments in the Philadelphia and tri-county area.

A Labor of Love
|
When news that the Prayer Room would be dedicated in honor of the IHM Sisters and blessed during a sacred ceremony to relocate the altar from St. Cecilia Convent, Phys. Ed. teacher Kathleen Ponto had an idea: design and create two stained glass windows to replace the existing clear ones. Kathleen shares her story. "The windows in the Prayer Room were truly a labor of love. It took me approximately 50 hours to complete the windows. The process is very time consuming beginning with designing the window and making 3 working patterns to the actual size of the project. Each piece of glass is individually cut from a large sheet of colored glass and then ground on all sides to make the edges smooth. After all of the glass is cut and ground, each piece of glass has to be wrapped with copper foil and then soldered. A stain is then applied to the solder and then the window is polished for the final step."
The first window is the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary's insignia. Kathleen noted, "this is a tribute to the sisters for their 114 years of service to the Coatesville area community." The second window is an image of the Holy Spirit which inspired Kathleen during a recent trip to the Vatican in Rome.
Kathleen added, "the most gratifying part of this project is knowing that through these windows, the Sisters of the IHM will forever be a part of our school."
Kathleen attended Temple University,Tyler School of Art and also studied abroad in Rome, Italy. She took a stained glass course in her last semester of school and fell in love with the process and the final outcome. She also studied in France two years after graduating college to continue her studies in stained glass.

Congratulations Graduates!
|
Fifty-eight students graduated on June 6th during a mass at St. Peter Church in West Brandywine. The theme for this year's 8th Grade Eucharistic Celebration and Commencement Ceremony was "You are the Light of the World." Father Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Peter Church, was the primary Celebrant. Following the mass, students were commended for academic achievements and awarded over $20,000 in scholarship money for high school. Many thanks to our benefactors and friends who further the mission of Catholic education with support at the secondary level.
Following the ceremony, graduates returned to PJP II School for a Dance to celebrate their accomplishments. Congratulations to the Class of 2017 and best of luck in the next chapter of their lives.

First Grade Here We Come!
|
Family members and friends gathered at St. Peter Church for Kindergarten graduation. Kinder students performed a variety of songs highlighting the spiritual, academic and social growth they experienced over the past school year. Congratulations to all our Kinder graduates....first grade here they come!

Track Team Finishes Strong
|
The PJP II Track team concluded the season with some outstanding performances at the Philadelphia Archdiocese Championships held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Against incredibly stiff competition, the team earned 17 medals, set 5 school records, and crowned an individual champion, Julian Haylock, who shattered his own school record in the 200 (29.27 seconds) to become the Archdiocese Champion! In addition, 12 personal records were broken. Coach Schmidt added, " 118 schools and 5000+ athletes participate in CYO track. Only about 20% of those athletes make it to the Archdiocese finals. It is a huge accomplishment just to get there. I was very proud to see everybody perform so well on the big stage. It's fair to say that we peaked at the right time. "

Baseball Team Advances to Championship
|
The JV Baseball team had a tremendous regular season, recording only 1 loss and finishing in 2nd place. Advancing to the Region 17 playoffs, the team won games against SS. Simon and Jude and SS. Peter and Paul, then lost to a strong SS. Philip and James team in the Region 17 Championship game. Congrats to the JV Baseball team and their Coaches on an outstanding season!
Varsity Baseball also had an admirable season, finishing 4th in the regular season. Advancing to the Region 17 playoffs, the team fell short in their 2nd playoff game. Congrats to all the players and their Coaches this year!
